Top Gun sequel leaves Cruise on the tarmac

24/07/2008 11:34:00 AM.  | Jesse Perez

When the suggestion a sequel to Top Gun, the 1986 film that shot Tom Cruise to superstardom, was in the works it sent the internet rumour mill into a spin.

Obviously, the rumour getting the most traction was that Cruise would be reprising his role as Maverick, the cocksure F-14 pilot who battled his way to the top of the pack.

But a spokesman from Paramount said that there was “no way” Cruise would be putting on the badged jacket for a second time.

Cruise and Paramount parted ways after 14 year relationship when the 46-year-old’s controversial behaviour, including the denouncement of anti-depressant drugs, became too much for Viacom CEO Summer Redstone.

Details of the sequel are scarce at this point – no indication that any of the original cast, or the original director Tony Scott, will be returning.
