No merry Christmas for millions suffering mortgage stress by December

25/07/2008 6:40:00 AM.  | Victoria Owens

Lenders have forecast a grim outlook for struggling mortgage holders over the next six months as the housing affordability crisis worsens.

It's not going to be a merry Christmas for more than a million Australian households this year, according to a new report which predicts mortgage stress will hit record levels by December.

Already 837 thousand families are suffering from some form of mortgage stress, with household budgets continually hit by skyrocketing interest rates and the cost of living.

Wizard home loans and Fujitsu Consulting says stress levels are rising in line with their projections and with more than seven million mortgages currently being paid off - stress will top the million mark in time for the festive season.

Martin North from Fujitsu says by Christmas the numbers will be much worse.

“There are around 800 thousand people in some degree of stress today, of which 340 thousand are in severe stress, meaning that they are finding it really difficult to pay their mortgages on time.

“As we look forward to December we think that over a million will be in some sort of stress by the end of the year.”

So what has Wayne Swan's first budget done for the working families that Kevin Rudd was so focused on before the election?

This is the fallout from Howards spending not Rudds, what the hell lets blame him anyway afterall he has had 8 months or so to fix all Howards stuff ups from the last 10 years.

Alan Hoffman-You are a first class goose. There were no stuff ups during the Coalitions period in office. It was so good that the political commentators were saying, before the last election, that young people might vote for Labor because they had not experienced any economic hardships during the previous decade. They were unaware that the economy could be a problem for them-well Rudd has made them aware now. Rudd matched the daddy of all the Coalitions spending promises and that was the $34 billion tax cuts-so if Howard was guilty for spending then so too was Rudd.

Alan Hoffman, would you give us a few of the Howard economic 'stuff-ups' you refer to. The Australian economy had been booming until the end of 2007.

As if its got anything to do with Rudd or Howard, its got to do with a basket case American credit economy driven by poor banking practices and greedy bankers!

I don't know about everybody else but we have been in mortgage stress the day we bought our home 15 years ago and i expect it to be the same till the day we pay it off,but at least one thing is we had the opportunity to buy one back then, how the young people of today are going to do it I don't know,I guess our children will just have to wait till we die to get a home now.How many people here reading remember the day's of 17 to 19% rates that we used to have.there was now way we could buy 1 then.
