Opposition are "gutless" on climate change: Swan

28/07/2008 11:55:00 AM.  |
Treasurer Wayne Swan has branded the opposition "gutless" on climate change, saying the issue has become a tool for leadership jostling.

Coalition MPs are meeting in Canberra tomorrow and Wednesday to formulate a policy response to the Rudd government's carbon emissions trading model.

Division among Liberal MPs has exacerbated lingering leadership tensions.

Mr Swan said today the opposition should face up to the problem of climate change.

"The Liberals are so gutless they can't even front up to the problem," he told reporters.

"And now it's become the tool of various forces in the party room in their jostling for the leadership."

"This is too important an issue for Australia to be subject to that sort of treatment in the Liberal Party."

Mr Swan defended the government's plan for emissions trading in the face of criticism it was too rushed and will jeopardise the economy.

"Going carbon clean is a growth strategy for the future and a prosperity strategy," he said.

"We're not going to shy away from taking the tough long-term decisions that are required to underpin the future prosperity of this economy and this society."

Its not the only policy that the Liberals lack 'intestinal fortitude'. Turdbull and Costello can't even muster the courage to challenge lame duck Nelson for the leadership. Like mutt dogs the Liberals are all bark and no bite.

I wonder when folk to the left will realise that opposition leadership is not the main game. Government ineptness IS the main game. Rudd's inability to lead and actually make decisions IS the main game. The opposition (and its leadership debate inspired by a tired press) cannot influence Rudd's pathetic attempts at coherent policymaking.

isn't it funny that Mr Swan says that the opposition a gutless. I could've sworn that he was considering that the man has done nothing for anybody other than pushing up interest rates, fuel, food prices. But then again, maybe I'm wrong, may be the guy has really big balls to have allowed this to happen on sorry. Mr Swan, I was wrong. You have done something, you have screwed up this country financially. Well done. Now you can take your will earned rest on the backbench with Mr Rudd

So naive Sean Ambrose. Like a hungry cat they are just waiting for the right moment to pounce on your Rudd & Swan, the Dumb and Dumber of Australian politics. Probably their only mistake was thinking that Labor's Keystone Kops would take longer to be revealed as the fake, contrived, plastic walking slogans they are. It's only taken 8 months! The Costello and Turnbull team will make your pin up lightweights look like David confronted by Goliath. Can't wait. This will be so much fun.

We need decisive Leadership on Climate Change and Labor is providing it,The Libs after 12 years in Government and 8 months in Opposition still don't have a clear Policy on Climate Change. If they continue to fence sit then they will be destined to sit on the Opposition benches for a long time.

Keating..what is the proven link between carbon emissions and global warming? The latest research shows global warming preceeded carbon emissions. Do you get pleaseure from subscribing to Al Gore's retirement fund? Facts please NOT rhetoric.

I am not a scientist but i do watch good documentary's about effects of Climate Change .

Keating again, ..what is the proven link between carbon emissions and global warming? Why do you discount Evan's research...is it because you don't agree with it? And if that is the reason, then why do you disagree with it. All I'm saying is...BEFORE WE DRAG THIS COUNTRY HEADLONG INTO AN IRREVERSIBLE RECESSION OVER CARBON EMISSIONS LET'S MAKE SURE WE'VE GOT IT RIGHT> I'm NOT convinced. Al Gore IS NOT A SCIENTIST.

Keating - name the scientists to which you refer. Who exactly was working for the tobacco groups that are now working for big oil? If you cant then you should withdraw your comments and they are baseless.

A new report from the Union of Concerned Scientists offers the most comprehensive documentation to date of how ExxonMobil has adopted the tobacco industry's disinformation tactics, as well as some of the same organizations and personnel, to cloud the scientific understanding of climate change and delay action on the issue. According to the report, ExxonMobil has funneled nearly $16 million between 1998 and 2005 to a network of 43 advocacy organizations that seek to confuse the public on global warming science. "ExxonMobil has manufactured uncertainty about the human causes of global warming just as tobacco companies denied their product caused lung cancer," said Alden Meyer, the Union of Concerned Scientists' Director of Strategy & Policy. Keating (i'm sure you are a smart person), but for the last time ...what is the proven link between carbon emissions and global warming? Have you studied Evan's research? On what basis do you reject it?

Keating, the Denial Machine is (at least) 2 years out of date! The world and the debate has moved on. I suggest that you too move forward.

Bolton:A new study reveals that shrinking glaciers, plants blooming earlier across Europe and lakes declining in productivity in Africa can all be linked to human-caused climate change since 1970. These findings were published in the journal Nature on 15 May 2008. The IPCC Working Group II had previously found that anthropogenic warming (warming caused by human activities) is likely to have had an influence on many physical and biological systems. This study goes further to link specific observed changes in nature, even on particular continents, to increased greenhouse gas concentrations over the last 50 years. “We are seeing the impacts of human-caused climate change in many natural systems much earlier than previous studies had projected. Without urgent action to slow global warming, much larger changes will occur” said Professor David Karoly from the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Melbourne.

So Keating, why then as your Labor policy would you be increasing the population of this country? Surely Rudd's budget 2008 immigration increase policy is increasing his carbon footprint? Rudd is inconsistent (as you are in repeating Rudd rhetoric).

If the labour government were serious about going carbon clean they would make serious legislative changes to demand, renewable energies, not jump on the carbon bandwagon. The reality is that the science on carbons increasing temperature is not agreed upon...but we all agree that fossil fuels are dirty, cause pollution, make people sick, will run out, and are increasing in cost. Labors first substantive decision on the environment was to CUT a solar rebate that the liberals introduced!

As Minister for Agriculture, Tony Burke MP visits a cattle station in the NT, think what an insignificant dot a herd of cattle is in that vast landscape. Consider also, what a lot of garbage the assumption that "97% of livestock greenhouse gas emissions (methane)" are created from cows' digestive systems really is. No wonder that then worst polluters in industry want free permits for their emissions. The poor sheep and cattle of Australia (all 21 million of them) must make up the difference!

Swan is a failed Treasurer-he has achieved the highest rate of inflation since his predecessors and he also has the dubious distinction of achieving the lowest rate of business and consumer confidence in decades. A fantastic double. Now he is posing as a know it all Climate Scientist-what a joke.

This whole affair shows two things, one being that nothing has changed within the COALition since Howard the Coward got the boot, and that the Liberals will lose the next election. Sure Brengun is making friends with the GREEDISGOODITES, but they are just a minority. Keep it up Brengun, your job is to destroy the Libs once and for all, so far you're doing great.

Swan has absolutely no credibility no matter what he says. He has so far failed to "put downward pressure" on interest/inflation/petrol/grocery prices. All he has done so far to "combat" these issues are: talking down the economy, bashing & begging banks for raising interest rates, shopping dockets, mean testing solar panels (how is this for reducing emission, huh?), mean testing baby bonus which costs more to administer than saving, etc. The guy has no brain & as such his comments are worthless

W.O; I agree completely. Swan is currently the mouth of the government. He is expounding positions ad nauseam.....on portfolios that aren't his because we are off to hell with his financial policies! Maybe the Libs should just recruit the next year 12 of Nambour High as this is where all our Environmental Inteeligence seems to be coming from! But if it's anything like Mr Swan, it may be a few years before they leave!

The SPIN is amazing and the Australian public are yet to catch on - we now call it Climate Change not Global Warming - this surely has nothing to do with the fact that its winter and freezing?? wait till summer after we have a few weeks of hot weather they will revert to Global Warming!!!

Gutless - i would call Swan a coward - he didnt have the "BALLS to do something about the tax savings that the Australian economy didnt need, rather he just took the easy option and went ahead with it -to the detriment of the economy (upward pressure on inflation) then alcopops tax (upward pressure on Inflation) then medicare threshold (upward pressure on Inflation)not to mention stress on public hospitals - and he calls the Liberals gutless because they want to debate the issue?????

Last time I voted for Labour was Whitlam,I learnt my lesson but a couple of new generations have to learn their's. So one thing I can tell all you Labour types is History will repeat the vast majority will once again consign Labour to the scrapheap next Election,Why because they want what Labour will never provide Jobs,Integrity and a strong Economy,as for Integrity I don't seem to Remember the last Liberal facing Child Sex or Suchlike charges unlike the endless stream of Labour Rock Spiders

Yes, climate change is the current issue. The pre-election plight of working families suffering mortgage stress, high petrol prices and high grocery prices are now dismissed as tolerable - Labor is in-charge.

tony t, bangor. This isn't that difficult to understand so maybe if you asked your mummy first you wouldn't look so dumb in public. I will give you a simple explanation because, on reflection your mum probably isn't too bright either. Greenhouse gases cause global warming which causes the climate to change. There you go. The details are beyond you, or any Lib/Nat supporter to understand so you should just focus on the simple explanation and leave it to your betters to sort it out.
