China won't back down on Internet censorship

31/07/2008 4:10:00 PM.  | AAP
China says it will not back down on internet censorship for the Olympics, insisting banned sites were in breach of Chinese laws.

"A small number of Internet sites are blocked, mainly because they violate Chinese law," Beijing Olympic organising committee spokesman Sun Weide said when asked whether curbs for the foreign press would be lifted.

"We hope that foreign media will respect Chinese law in this matter."

Sun then explained to journalists what the policy on the internet would be.

"During the Olympic Games we are going to (give you) full access to the internet to facilitate your media reporting so that you can have full access to internet to do your reporting job," he said.

"The reason why you cannot go to some of these websites, the reason is they are disclosing or they are doing something illegal or transmitting information that is illegal based on the Chinese laws.

"For instance, they are propagating this evil cult the Falun Gong, they're doing something that is detrimental to the national interests of China.

"I hope the press will respect the Chinese laws and regulations."

To help foreign reporters overcome the Chinese government’s media censorship and shed light on closely shielded rights violations, the Coalition to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong (CIPFG) released today a detailed guide to detention facilities located within miles of Olympic venues and known for their severe abuse of Falun Gong prisoners of conscience. If the CCP does not have any skeletons in their cupboard why are they enforcing censorship on foreign reporters? For them the Olympics is a face-saving device gifted by the International Olympic Committee and they will trample on all human rights to paint a glorious picture like the Nazis did during the Olympics 50 years ago!Besides the chinese people who are kept in the dark about the Party's shenanigans the whole world knows about the gross Human Rights atrocities and mass killings...........

The CCP is ridiculous. Falun Gong is wide spread meditation practice. If they call it an evil cult, how come that the other 100some countries in the world didn't recognize it yet? Are they blind? - No, they just know it is peaceful friendly movement. The CCP is using the Olympics for its own interests. And they are afraid of - free media. Everyone knows that already. That's why the CCP mocks itself.

Do you really think the authorities censor the internet to hide skeletons in their cupboard? The Falun Gongs are in jail or house arrest, Tibet sealed off, the migrant workers and the homeless expelled, outspoken lawyers/journalists/bloggers locked up, the cupboards are closed but not by internet censor. Foreigners could read blocked Falun Gong sites before they come, why bother censor? A: PRC's own people must not find out about the mass withdrawals from the ruling communist party!
