Drug drivers targeted in new ad blitz

1/08/2008 10:58:00 AM.  | AAP
Young drivers who pop party drugs and get behind the wheel are the target of a graphic new advertising campaign to clamp down on drug driving.

The Transport Accident Commission (TAC) launched the campaign, which will air across Victoria from Friday night.

The ads target young men with the slogan "if you drive on drugs, you're out of your mind."

TAC Minister Tim Holding said 20 per cent of drivers killed on Victorian roads tested positive for amphetamine-type stimulants and cannabis.

Using drugs triples a driver's chances of a crash, yet research shows 71 per cent of drug users admit to driving within an hour of taking drugs.

"This campaign specifically targets the high number of young men putting themselves and others at risk when driving on drugs," Mr Holding said.

"Driving on drugs is illegal, stupid and highly dangerous.

"Driving under the influence of drugs is dangerous, because it makes you less alert, impairs your vision, reduces your coordination and prevents you from making the right decisions under pressure."
