Controversial AFL commentator Sam Newman is in more hot water after making an dubious comment on the AFL’s Footy Show last night.

After a clip was shown of Tasmanian MP Paula Wriedt, Newman made one of his trademark off-colour jokes.

“We couldn’t get her on, could we?” Newman said after watching vision of the MP.

“Worthy of coming on, her.”

Newman was immediately admonished by Footy Show host James Brayshaw.

“Sam you cannot say that,” Brayshaw said.

“It’s a disgraceful thing to say, Sam, and don’t do it again.”

Newman defended his choice of wording on the show, saying he “didn't mean it that way”, but his co-hosts were clearly unimpressed with the comment.

In May this year Newman was suspended from the Footy Show and told to undergo counseling.

Nine publicity said this morning that the comment was a misunderstanding and that Newman was simply suggesting Ms Wriedt appeared on the show.

Sam should have left when Maguire did. Brayshaw is a PC lightweight I cannot stand him. Lyon is overexposed. They disrespect Sam and treat him with disgusting condescension. Sam is a genius, the smartest most original thinker to ever play the game, he has been a delight to watch over these 14 years. He is a stand up guy. I was appalled when he accepted Nine's coerced 'counselling', he should have told them to stick it, this country is turning into a psychiatric fascist state, thought police.

Pul-lesssse! What was offensive about Sam's remarks? That's how we all talk among mates, and with a beer in our hands and when we act like the schoolboys we once were. You should hear my thoughts on Belinda Neil when I have a beer in my hand. It's only the media which wants everybody to be perfect; which is not real life. Was it after 9:30pm? Of course it was. In this time slot we are subject to nude news, girls highlighting their crutches in SMS chat ads and a lot of other smut. Sheesh!

Tasteless, disrespectful, immature, what else can we expect from Sam Newman?

Give me a break. Nothing wrong with that comment by Sam said in jest. Especially seeing the show is on air after 9.30pm in Victoria and much later elsewhere. It was certainly no worse than all the non stop sexual innuendo on the 'The Today Show' on Channel 7 yesterday morning between 9am to 11am. Leave Sam alone. He is good entertainment value.

Sam Newman, is now and always has been a grub. What he thinks is humour is just downright, offensive smut. Get him off!

Why is this story even on the Site? Who are the people behind this story wanting to make life difficult for Sam and for what reason? Is LIVENEWS that hard up for stories you have make an issue of a comment said in jest on a Television show after 9.30pm.

I think what Sam said is funny, not bad. The guys on the sydney footy show say much worse. Stop picking on Sam. I am a woman and it doesnt offend me at all.

Sam Newman is an act. That can be confusing for some people. Apparantly he is a great guy. However,to even suggest that it is OK to comment about a woman ,who has been invited to make comment on their show in a professional capacity, in a degrading, sexual way, is archaic. She wasnt on the show as an entertainer. She had no warning she was to be used as the butt of a really crap joke. That is where it is wrong and that is where James Brayshaw was correct in pulling him up on it.

I'm a female and I dont think Sam is offensive. What he said could be taken the wrong way or not. To the people that took it the wrong way, get your mind out of the gutter. Maybe take a teaspoon of cement also. There are lot of things wrong with this planet and Sam Newman isn't one of them.

If that lightweight (wannabe) Brayshaw didnt mouth off after Sams comment it may have not been such a big deal. I will miss Sam.

So it's ok for a woman on street talk 2 weeks ago to grope sam in a public street...and it's even ok for channel nine to get her on the footy show the next week to have a good laugh about it...Talk about double standards.. And I know what some will say...he probably enjoyed it.... Whether he did or not, doesn't make it right...does it?

Hurry up and legalise gay marriage so Sam can wed that other sexist boofhead Kennett and they can live happily every after, preferably on the Gold Coast.

I am not a fan of Sam Newman particularly, but I watched the show last night and I am less a fan of this article, which in short doesn't do Sam justice.. but then again being truthful never sold a newspaper. I watched Sams comments and thought that James and Jim over-reacted. Sam promptly defended his comments and as has already been commented - If Brashaw hadn't mouthed off we wouldn't be reading this less than average reporting..

It's something a bloke might say down at the pub - not on national TV. Despite his lack of class, he's a huge time waster. It's supposed to be a footy show. Spending half an hour comparing Jason Dunstall to an ape is a ridiculous waste of "air-time". Perhaps I'll look forward to the footy show next week now!

Doug Pollard, you are an absolute moron. You said " Hurry up and legalise gay marriage so Sam can wed that other sexist boofhead Kennett and they can live happily every after, preferably on the Gold Coast."... Now, where do I start moron, you are complaining about sexism right? So why is homophobia in the same sentence? Me? I'm not a PC moron, but you apparently are a half arse PC moron. For the record Kennett is a Big Pharma shill whom I despise.

I have watched the clip several times and I cannot fathom how anybody could be offended or find it offensive unless they had an axe to grind against Sam Newman. He is not my favourite person but for LiveNews or anyone else to make an issue of what he said is more a reflection on them than on Sam Newman. Please, what has happened to inbiassed reporting?

i think Sam Newman is offensive because he comments such comments to women that do not belong to him if sSam Newman comments were about his own women Sam Newman's comments wouldnt be offencive to me it seems like Sam Newmam is making these comments to somebody's wife who is at home bringing up young children under the age of having yet started school and not at all some night club women and i think this is what is causeing persons to become offended he should make such remarks to his own women.

Poor Sam. This man thinks he is God's man to all woman Think again Sam Most woman think you are lower then a snakes behind and one should be treated accordingly. My best advice to Sam give it away and become a garbage collection person even that is too good for you. Or perhaps you should work in a treatment plant so whilst you are cleaning the **** you can clean your mouth at the same time.

Uhhh....Jane sweetheart, why would it be fine if the comments he made were only about "the women he owned"??? I don't really think people can be "owned." I think this guy either hates women or just has no clue how to treat them. I'd almost feel sorry for him if he weren't such a w*nker.

Agree wholeheartedly David. When did we get to be so PC. Sam can be hard to take at times, but he is one of the old gen of larrikin aussie males. The condecending patronising of him by his younger colleagues is something i find disrepectful. Maybe had the host not had his mind in the gutter the comment may have been taken as I took it, meaning she was worthy of having on the show. I am more offended by the teenage girls on the SMS mobile phone ads than I am of Sam. Get off his back PC gone mad
