Melbourne Victory have booked a berth in the pre-season cup final after defeating defending A-League champions Newcastle 1-0 in Port Macquarie.
Veteran midfielder Tom Pondeljak scored in the 82nd minute as the Victory leapfrogged Adelaide United to claim top spot in group A and a place in Wednesday's pre-season decider.
Adelaide had led the group by one point heading in to the third and final round of pool games, but were held to a 0-0 draw by Perth in Mount Gambier, allowing Melbourne to pounce.
The Victory are set to meet the Wellington Phoenix in the A-League's pre-season final after the Phoenix upset Sydney FC 3-2 in Wollongong overnight.
The New Zealand side came from two goals down at halftime to secure both the win and a home final on Wednesday because of their superior competition points.
