Mokbel hires new lawyer to defend charges

4/08/2008 12:31:00 PM.  |
Accused murderer and drug trafficker Tony Mokbel has hired a new lawyer to fight his charges.

Renowned Melbourne lawyer Rob Stary today told the Melbourne Magistrates Court he is now representing Mokbel.

Mr Stary asked the court for drug trafficking charges against Mokbel laid by the Australian Federal Police to be adjourned until late September.

"There is a considerable volume of material that needs to be digested," Mr Stary said.

Mr Stary has represented clients including accused terrorist Jack Thomas and a man accused of having links to the Tamil Tigers terrorist group.

Mokbel, who appeared in court via videolink from Barwon Prison, will re-appear in court on September 29 to fight the federal charges.

An application for Mokbel's charges to be stayed until his appeal to the European Court of Human Rights is finalised will be heard on August 29.

Mokbel's other charges include the murders of underworld figures Lewis Moran and Michael Marshall in 2004.

He is also charged with trafficking and conspiring to traffic large commercial quantities of methylamphetamine in Melbourne, Greece and other unknown locations between July 5, 2006 and June 5, 2007.
