Former Labor prime minister Paul Keating says current Labor boss Kevin Rudd lacks a clear message and is "running at the behest of little press secretaries".

Fresh from launching a book recounting his own achievements in office, Mr Keating emerged from retirement tonight to offer some advice for his successor as Labor prime minister.

"I think if there's any problem the government has, when I say a problem I don't think it's a problem necessarily, it is to not have an overarching narrative in place," he told ABC Television.

Mr Keating sidestepped a question about the perception of Mr Rudd as a micromanager.

"You can't micromanage a thing like the commonwealth," he said.

Asked if Mr Rudd was giving himself enough time to think things through, however, Mr Keating counselled a measured pace.

"Frenetic activity, in the end, suiting journos, running at the behest of little press secretaries, doesn't pay off," he replied.

Mr Keating declared that when he was in charge, he always had a clear message to take to the public. This had not continued with the "post-me Labor party".

His advice to Mr Rudd was to craft a message around the need to boost productivity, cement Australia's position in Asia, and become a republic.

Earlier Mr Keating called Peter Costello a ‘slow acting dope’, and slammed the Liberal Party for reconsidering him as leader.

Senior Liberals have said Mr Costello will not challenge Brendan Nelson for the Liberal leadership but may agree to a "friendly takeover" if he stands aside.

At a book launch in Sydney today, Mr Keating wasn’t shy to say what he thinks about the plans.

"Mr Costello has made not one valuable structure change in the Australian economy in the 12 years he was treasurer," Mr Keating said.

"It's a Liberal Party so bereft of talent that they have go to such a low grade performer as Costello to come back as their leader ... he is a slow acting dope."

Mr Keating also criticised Mr Costello for "just sitting there and throwing out the tax cuts" to pump up demand as the Reserve Bank was forced to revive interest rates to pump it back down.

"In national terms, to have such a nong - and he is, in policy terms he is a mouse - to have him back again speaks volumes about the Liberal Party," Mr Keating said.

"In Labor Party terms, I sort of hope he does as he makes it a better pitch for us."

Speaking about Mr Costello's forthcoming biography - expected to be released in six weeks - Mr Keating said he expected it to be "as boring as he is".

Mr Costello returned from a South Pacific holiday last Friday and has made no comment on the Liberal leadership, or his possible retirement.

The Daily Telegraph got it right today (Thur 07Aug08) with thier editorial with a picture of Sheik Taj El-Din El Hilaly coming up to Keating at his book launch to Sheik (sic) hands. (It was Paul Ketaing who granted Sheik "Women Are Like Meat For Cats" Hilaly, permanent residency in 1990 after the Liberals, and his own Immigration Minister wanted him deported). The Tele asks, "What sort of nong would do something like that?" It was Whitlam and Grasby who ruined this country. Both are "nongs".

Keating has to be one of life's biggest losers, and now feels that he is worthy to comment on the party that destroyed him (perhaps that's the motivation?)

The best think Paul Keating could give us would be a State Funeral. When will Keaing get it through his thick head that 'the people' voted him out, that is, they got rid of him? And remember he scurried out the back door of The Lodge when he left it. He didn't leave by the front. That says it all.

David great comments, were you the guy who rang 2GB today and said a similar comment? It was really funny. Anyway the other comment (if it was you) was even funnier, I quote, Keating would be good for a condom commercial because he was good reason to bloody use one. Get what I mean? End quote. (something like that) I was in hysterics when I heard that. SOOOOO TRUE

We all know who the DOPE was and it wasn't Peter Costello, one PJ Keating takes that crown along with all the politicians on the labour side politics who voted him as leader - how long did he last? Didn't take long for Most of Australia to recognise what a Dud he was, just as as most Australians are starting to see what a dud Rudd is. PJ we will see who the dopey ones are in about 2 years eh?

Spot on Barry, the Bovver Boy is still sore from the bollicking Howard gave him. Others get over it and get on with life but the Bovver Boy just can't get over it.

"It's a Liberal Party so bereft of talent that they have go to such a low grade performer as Costello to come back as their leader" : It's a news website so bereft of talent that they have to go to such a low grade performer as Keating to come back with some kind of political comment.

Now I'm not all that flush on pollitics but i do know that Costello cant come back as leader as he never was. Either way you see it,there is little or NO difference between either party. They both sell us down the river for their mates. The only difference is the Industry the mates are in, as for us it dont matter what that industry is, because they all screw us. You all sit and argue over basis of Bi- partisan sell off of OZ. Thinking one lot is better than the other...LOL.Libs can count though

Luke, Love him or loathe him, Paul Keating added colour and humour to politics. I was angry with costello for taking his bat and going home after the last election as he was great with the one liners as well. II hope he Peter Costello does get the leadership, he will make politics interesting again. Good on you paul, you get them hook line and sinker every time. I will sit back and wait for Stephanie's call

Damned right Paul Keating, but what can they do because as dismal as he is, Costello is still the best option the Libs have. This isn't a Leadership Crisis, it's a party wide crisis. The Libs are the dumb peoples party. They select idiots, they vote idiots in and then they wonder why the have no viable leader. This is multi layer idiocy, from the grass roots all the way up to the bottom of a deep hole occupied by Brengun the next ex leader. If the Lib party was a horse you'd have to shoot it.

You're right Graeme. The Labor Party selects far better leaders and not idiots at all such as Morris Iemma. You Labor supporters really need to open your eyes and not be so one sided. Both sides of politics are having real issues in my opinion.

Peter Costello has proved himself to be the best Treasurer that this Country has ever seen. The Australian people agreed with this by returning the Coalition to Government on four occasions-more than Keating as Prime Minister was able to achieve. Keating gave us a recession and he was rolled by his own colleagues when he proposed his version of the GST. Howard and Costello introduced it very successfully and the Country has benefited from it. Keating is not aging very gracefully and he should shut up if he can't be constructive.

Then He should just shut up and Go away....he didnt do anything constructive when in power so he has no hope now. As for keating speaking the TRUTH??The ONLY "TRUTH" P.Keating ever spruiked was the little bit about "RUDD lacking DIRECTION".!! Constructivity..Costello kept our Economy on the move, very Constructive indeed. Keating Systematically destroyed our economy.....Yep, I can see where a TOOL like KEATING is coming from..He still has it eh..the gift of speaking Sh*T

Good on ya Paul! Look at all the frightened little right-wing weasels scurry out of the ground to hack at you for having the audacity to call it as it is. Costello's a spineless tool who was fortunate enough to preside over a huge cyclical boom. He left us with nothing in productivity gains to deal with the inevitable downturn. Great to see you back!

On the contrary o musical one, its only the left that keep raising the debate. NO ONE FROM THE LIBERAL SIDE OF POLITICS RAISES THE ISSUE. We are more interested in Rudd's screwing up of Australia...a PM bereft of policy ideas that he keeps releasing discussion papers, green papers etc to see if ANYONE ELSE HAS THE ANSWERS FOR HIM!

Posted by: Geoff Bolton, Lane Cove

Let me reiterate, Costello is a dope and I was the best PM this country has ever seen.

Yes PLACIDO DOMINGO you were sensational when you struck those high notes in the Recession that we had to have. And now you have a bright young understudy, one Kevin Rudd, that is following in your footsteps he has learned the recession aria very well indeed-very promising-gudonya.

You can always tell the labor voters, they are usually the nasty, vicious name calling, bitter and twisted individuals. Nothing that ever came out of Paul Keatings mouth was pleasant. He specialised in character assasinations. And one of the commenters here does exactly the same. His ego would be pumped by me naming him, and I don't intend to do that, but you all know who I mean.
