NSW motorists feeling ripped off by the cost of their compulsory insurance greenslips should make their complaints known, Premier Morris Iemma says.
Drivers are facing greenslip price hikes of up to 80 per cent, as some insurance companies introduce a new risk category for the under 30s.
The risk category, which previously applied to under 25s, has been broadened resulting in some premiums rising from below $400 to more than $600 this financial year.
Mr Iemma today encouraged motorists to "shop around" to ensure they were getting the best price for their compulsory third-party insurance.
He said there were also avenues to go down if they felt they were being ripped off.
"There are guidelines and there is a complaint system," Mr Iemma told reporters.
"I would encourage anyone who feels they have been unfairly treated because of the way an insurance company has calculated the risk factor associated with someone's age to then come forward and make use of the ... system."
Opposition finance spokesman Mike Baird said it was unacceptable that the new risk category had been created without any explanation.
"Where are the facts from the insurance companies?" Mr Baird asked.
"Morris Iemma should answer the people of NSW on how these increases came about," he told reporters.
