Seven slammed for showing AFL during Olympics

10/08/2008 7:58:00 PM.  | AAP
Angry viewers have attacked the Seven Network's decision to interrupt their Olympic Games coverage to show the Sunday afternoon AFL match.

Seven's website has been bombarded with complaints on its "Fan's Forum" who are calling on others to boycott the broadcaster's coverage over its decision to show the Adelaide versus Richmond match.

"Football is on and televised every weekend. Olympics comes every 4 years," forum user musicdancerecords posted on the site.

"I was all excited and prepared to sit and watch the Diving today - but guess what - Football is obviously more important to Channel 7."

Users are also encouraging viewers to call Seven to complain about the decision while others suggest contacting advertisers to voice their disgust.

"Australia are likely to win at least one or two medals this afternoon, we will be forced to watch a low-table game of Australian Rules," user mygoodnessyouaredumb wrote.

"Seven are a discgrace (sic) to the country."

Today's Adelaide versus Richmond game was a clash between seventh versus eleventh.

Adelaide had a comfortable 63 point win.

The Seven Network has defended the move, saying SBS continued to show events from Beijing as the complementary broadcaster.

"There is coverage of the Games on SBS while we're at the football," spokesman Simon Francis said in a statement to AAP.

I hate AFL. I love Rugby League, but would have been prepared to forgo a match to watch the Olympics, they are a world wide event and come along once only every 4 years. I couldn't believe the arrogance of Channel 7 shoving this so called Australian game down our throats when no one else in the world watches it, except southern and western states. Pitiful effort Channel 7. Then the ads, don't even get me started. 2012 must go to 10 or 9 plus Pay TV (you pay for the privilege). Take a hike Ch 7!

I thought 7 got it right - I'd much rather watch AFL than the Olympics - well done 7 !!!!! Mind you there are less ads on 10!!!!! :-)

oh come on, does ANYONE hear actually think that seven is going to go non-stop olympics and not show a BIT of afl? afl is an AUSTRALIAN tradition!. i mean, cum on! u'll be ova ur dive, or ur swimming race next year when the olympics are ova, but afl is a BIT more continuous and reliable. sorry to those people who think seven is going to drop its most RELIABLE and FREQUENT viewers, compared to their ONCE EVERY FOUR YEAR VIEWERS!

Olympic Althletes train bloody hard everyday of their lives for 1 event every four years. Every single day of the year we have to put up with the bloody AFL. It's about time other sports are given a go. There are other sports out there not just AFL. It is a waste of money, time and effort. Lozza Mac, perhaps if AFL was a decent sport more people would watch it, and exactly, let other people get to watch their sport after 4 years, after all we have to put up with AFL every single day of our lives

More people would watch it ??? Where have you been Mike, it is played in every state in the country, and can still fill the MCG even with 2 interstate sides playing there. I would say there are more who would want to watch AFL than the Olympics. Sheeeeeeesh it is on SBS too, or do you watch it 24/7 ? It wasnt shown for maybe 4 hours in a whole week, imagine the audacity of the AFL, stealing 4 hours from a week of non stop Olympics, how dare they. LOL
