Brendan Nelson slides in latest poll

12/08/2008 6:35:00 AM.  | Gillian Cannon
Voter satisfaction with opposition leader Brendan Nelson has hit rock bottom, at its lowest since he was elected.

While support for the Coalition has remained steady, Doctor Nelson has taken a battering.

According to the latest Newspoll, satisfaction for the opposition leader has fallen two points to 31 percent, while the number dissatisfied with his leadership has jumped 6 points.

It follows a tumultuous two weeks of leadership difficulties over the coalition's emissions trading policy and speculation about Peter Costello as future leader.

In the preferred prime minister stakes, Dr Nelson slipped two points to 12 per cent, compared to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, whose rating crept up two points to 68 per cent.

Mr Rudd's satisfaction rating remained unchanged on 58 per cent, with dissatisfaction also unchanged, standing at 29 per cent.

But despite Dr Nelson's standing in the polls, broad support for the coalition has remained unchanged.

The coalition's primary vote was up one point to 38 per cent, compared to Labor which remained unchanged on 47 per cent.

I see the Newspoll pollsters are still only polling at Liberal Party offices.

Graeme Henderson-Your usual brainless comment-What makes you think that people polled at Liberal party offices, as you put it, are going to give Rudd a satisfaction rating of 58%.Liberals are far to clever to be taken in by Rudds spin-its people of your ilk that are susceptible to Rudds all talk and no action propaganda.

Oh dear oh dear Despondent Desperate Desmond. I see that you are a bit touchy about this aren't you? No sense of humour. Well you see Des I was trying to figure out where you would find enough idiots that 12% of any group would support Brengun Half Nelson. You minorities are just too sensitive. Nelson is doing well though, 12 % is better than 7%, although he is plumeting towards single figures yet again. And there are no viable alternatives, the Libs are losers.

Graeme Henderson-No problems Rudd is self destructing-the drover’s dog will win the next election for the Coalition. The Labor faithful will soon turn unfaithful when their hip pocket nerves star feeling the pain. The writing is on the wall-inflation heading for 5% etc.etc.etc.

Live News....WHERE IS MY ENTRY ON THIS TOPIC?? Nothing abusive, nothing sensitive?? What's going on??

(I'll try again Live News). The Liberal leadership with be dealt with WHEN THE LIBERALS ARE READY. NOT when the media are ready, NOT when Henderson gets bored, NOT when Rudd wants a distraction, NOT when Swan can't think of what to do. Its only the looney left (and the pathetic media) that keep churning this up. FORGET IT. In good time we will do what needs to be done. (Not quite the same as the first entry, but hopefully Live News won't lose or edit this one!)

HO HUM, more of the same. Who are these people polling. Who are they speaking to ? Certainly not anyone I know. Funny the topic of Opposition leadership isnt high on the conversation agenda where I come from. SURVIVING grocery watch, petrol watch and all the other "watchers" is the topic here. Watching Mr Rudd flit from one country to another is one more topic being discussed. Even a tragic headline here doesnt escape the Howard Costello comments. Almost time for me to read the REAL NEWS. BORED

Maybe Nelson is polling better in Pakistan do you think Susan? One would think listening to you that Howard stayed home throughout his reign of terror.Poor old Bolts he wants to wait till the Libs are ready.A bit like trying to take a favourite toy of a child."where's my blog" pls Bolts rather unbecoming dont you think.Just be patient you have all day to be humiliated.Poor old Harris he cant wait for the "drovers dog". Neither can I because I think he will get more than 12%.

I love it, all these Liberal supporters trying to spin victory out of defeat. One thing is certain, the Libs are not going to get voted out of office anywhere. Prime Minister Rudd is maintaining his popularity, noe according to many Lib fanatics here he should be way down by now, what is happening, don't these Lib supporters know what they are talking about. The Libs lack leadership and leadership potential, it must be hard being in that hopeless a situation.

Hendo Darling. Read "Bolts" entry..... "The Liberal leadership with be dealt with WHEN THE LIBERALS ARE READY". That just about sums the debate up for those of us in the centre, and those of us that have a life beyond abusing total strangers.

Frankly Lance im not interested. Im nore interested in TODAY and the next 3 yrs, and if the last almost 9 mnths of Labor are any indicator, we will have more watching, more reports, more talk, more overseas aid, and travel, and more spin. Please feel free to correct me if Mr Rudd has actually kept even one promise he made last year, or ACTED in the "working families" interests.I am sure many Australians who voted for Mr Rudd must even be beginning to wonder what happened to the promises.

oh oh oh susan mr rudd said sorry that was one and he scratched the awa's so thats 2 other than that i cant think of anything, must be the painkillers. other than that he set up lots of committees to oversee lots of committees to oversee lots of things. money well spent i have heard it said. yes we could have used that money to put in the pockets of the pensioners. oh but dont worry we can set up a committee to look into how we could have done that better, i like rudd, he is a top bloke

As for Dr Nelson i doubt he will be there in 3 years, so i dont really care what he is up to. he is not really doing anything, he seems rather weak to me. we needed a change, howard and his lot were doing far to much damage and were out of control. we put the boot in, and now we have to tighten the reigns on rudd, he seems to be a bit to smug. maybe we could invite him round for a barbie hey graeme and tell him what to do. for starters stop all these committees and get some action
