Girl 'not pretty enough' for Opening Ceremony

12/08/2008 11:12:00 PM.  |
It has been claimed that the little girl who starred at the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony was miming and was only put on stage because the real singer wasn't considered attractive enough.

Ceremony muscial director Chen Qigang says pigtailed Lin Miaoke was selected to appear because of her cute appearance and hadn't sung a note of the emotional song Ode to the Motherland.

Photographs of Lin in a bright red party dress were published in newspapers and websites all over the world and the official China Daily hailed her as a rising star on Tuesday.

But Chen says the girl whose voice was actually heard by the 91,000 capacity crowd at the main Olympic stadium was in fact seven-year-old Yang Peiyi, who has a chubby face and uneven teeth.

"The reason why little Yang was not chosen to appear was because we wanted to project the right image, we were thinking about what was best for the nation," Chen said in an interview that was posted briefly on the popular news website Sina.com.

"The reason was for the national interest. The child on camera should be flawless in image, internal feelings, and expression," he said.

"Lin Miaoke is excellent in those aspects. But in terms of voice, Yang Peiyi is perfect, each member of our team agreed."

This girl is an imposter and should not be given credit for the performance she didn't deliver. How superficial are these organisers! Beauty is more than skin deep. The real singer should have been given the accolades, not this front-girl! This is not team work, but exploitation! I guess that's normal in China!

I guess i should not be surprised by this, it saddens me though that the poor little child who sung so beautifully will remember that she sung behind the scenes. i guess she wont know any better, i hope, but its still sad. image is everything in this world. on the yahoo olympic forum, there was people picking the ugliest people there, it was terrible. some even being rude about the lady who did the judo. why does everyone have to look like rice? beauty is only skin deep after all.

I'm not disturbed by this. As a matter of fact, I'm down-right amazed at the candor of Mr Chen. Every country does this in one way or another. Beauty is very important. Talent will always be second. It's always been that way and will always be that way. I'm sure England didn't put any pretty people on the ships it sent to Australia several centuries ago. It's just nature.

This is not right - Yang Peiyi will forever remember that she was 'not pretty enough' for the 2008 Olympic. As for Lin Miaoke, what kind of moral concept did she indirectly promoted, by taking the spot light of someone who is not as attractive as her. Maybe the youngsters don't know it now, sooner or later they will realise the decision made based on " child on camera should be flawless in image" will definitely impact the way they see life.

This really reflects badly on China who's attempts to be "perfect" at all costs have just shown them to be clinically soul-less - this is a prime example. Yang is actually cute as well as a good singer but I can't help notice that Yang has more "typically Chinese" features than Lin who looks a little more Japanese or even, dare I say it - Western. BTW Pithy from California - come over to Oz and say that to our faces!! Many of us are descendants of the convicts you suggest were all plug-ugly!!

It's a dreadful indictment of the Chinese that they have used two very young little girls in this way, one to be known as a star and the other relegated to the "heard but not seen" category. It's also an indictment of the person, supposedly from California, who comments that "it's just nature" and " talent will always come second to beauty" Don't judge every other country by your own.

I have seen the pic of the little girl who actually sang , and I find her quite beautiful, how sad she was replaced. To pithy California, funny that, I thought they sent many of the same to your country too, in fact one of the reasons they colonised Australia was because they could no longer send them to your country. Take a look at your history. Your country is the leader in manufactured beauty, all fake, most of our beauties are naturally beautiful, lol, and we know it. Your envy is showing.

California doesn't speak for all of the U.S., so please don't take his/her comment as such. To California: Even if 99% of the population follow something that is wrong, that doesn't make the wrong thing right - just popular. Once upon a time upon a place or two, it was "popular" to beat children, to own slaves, to suppress women's rights, to annihilate a people, and deny freedom to speak your mind, but thank goodness those days "went out of style" in many cases.

Come on, give the Chinese a break. She was replaced in the interest of the nation. And who said Yang Peiyi was ugly? It's the western journalists who keep saying that - repeated a thousand times. Further reading -- http://shadowcorpse.wordpress.com/2008/08/17/typical-western-style-reporting/
