Victorian police and commuters watched as a gunman shot himself dead moments after shooting his estranged partner in the face in a suburban Melbourne railway station car park.

The man, 65, of Keilor Downs, shot his former partner, a 49-year-old Sydenham woman, after she walked to her car at Watergardens railway station in northwest suburban Sydenham about 5.20pm (AEST) on Monday, police said.

The woman was seriously wounded when she was shot with a handgun after a brief argument with the man.

Several witnesses saw the incident.

Detective Senior Sergeant Stuart Bateson of the homicide squad said police could not confirm the relationship between the man and woman.

But police sources at the scene said it was believed the two were an estranged couple and the former relationship was the subject of an intervention order.

Det Snr Sgt Bateson said a police unit was nearby and arrived at the scene within a few minutes to confront the gunman.

"(They) challenged the man to put down the gun. When he saw the police he turned the gun on himself and he is now deceased," he said.

The man suffered a gunshot wound to the head. No shots were fired at police.

Witnesses told police the man was within a few metres of the woman when he fired.

"They told us that there had been an argument between the two of them and the male pulled what appeared to be a small handgun and shot the woman. (He was) very close," Det Snr Sgt Bateson said.

The woman was rushed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a serious condition with a single gunshot wound to the face.

She was conscious and gave police some personal details before paramedics took her away.

She has since undergone surgery and remains in a stable condition in hospital.

More evidence of the value of the Howard - Costello gun buy back. How much did that cost?

Henderson you silly old fool....so leaving MORE guns out there would make it better? Don't worry about what it cost - you'll never know how many lives the buyback saved. But don't tell me you subscribe to Port Arthur being a conspiracy?????? Tough decision by Howard. But that's what we got from Howard..tough decisions. All we get from Rudd is "talking" and "watching"

Stupid comment Graeme. A woman is in hospital and a man is dead and you are trying to turn the story into a political one. Very poor judgement mate.

Frank Andrews, Don't call me mate, that is something you have to earn. Yes there is a victim, but I am not referring to her, I am pointing out that the expensive policy of the Howard Costello gov failed to prevent this, failed to protect this woman from this mongrel. I have a great deal of sympathy for the woman, none for the coward that shot her, it can rot. You Frank are the one trying to drag this down to a low level by dragging the individuals into the debate, shame on you for doing that.

Frank, Henderson does not have a clue. He makes a profoundly silly statement then tries to twist it around. You are right Frank, Hendersdon is completely wrong - again!)

Graeme Henderson-I will not call you 'mate' but I will call you by your correct name FOOL because you have earned it. You are so warped with hatred for John Howard that you cannot differentiate between State and Federal responsibilities. Law and order is a State matter and your left wing Labor mates have been running Victoria for a while now.

Well we've really brought out the bottom feeders here with Bloto and Despondent Des wailing and ranting. I notice Frank had no problem with the comment on this page; http://www.livenews.com.au/Articles/2008/08/11/Man_charged_over_sex_shop_murder . Frank has no concerns for morality, he is simply prepared to use gutter tactics to defend Howard and Costello. These comments appeared at the same time but the idiot yanker didn't offend Howard's Brown shirts.

Some who post here really should be totally ignored by other people with a more balanced view on life. Responding to the crazed ravings of one so obviously twisted with hate that any headline will bring anti coalition rhetoric, seems only to feed his manic depressive state. Far better to ignore, with a little luck he just may disappear. Maybe then we will be saved from seeing these posts on every headline available no matter what the topic. This tops all his previous posts, my advice, ignore it
