Doubts about the future of FuelWatch have lead to speculation the Alcopops tax may also struggle to pass the Senate.

Two key Senators have pulled support for the petrol pricing website, forcing Health Minister Nicola Roxon to defend the pre-mixed alcohol tax.

Ms Roxon has told the National Press Club 1.1 million litres less alcohol is being consumed in Australia since the tax was introduced.

“If those figures are right, that our measure is working, it means the industry has a clear reason to be opposed to it because it does reduce their sales.

“I would have thought, and I certainly will invite every senator, and I certainly invite to the Liberal opposition to look very closely as to where these figures are coming from and which figures are credible.”

An extra tax which weakens business and returns less than the previous tax. Do I really fear that it won't be implemented? I agree that fewer drinkers drinking to excess is a good thing, but if the restriction is only on low level drinkers from having an occasional drink i think it appalling. Nicola has to be more persuasive before I'm sold, but then she isn't trying to persuade me, she is trying to convince the rusted on supporters.

Just let it play out and we can have a double dissolution election. Given the strength of support for Labor these minorities are playing with fire. The tax on Alco Pops is sensible, making drinks like that is no better than putting heroin in baby bottles. As well as the Alco Pop Tax double the tax on all alcohol and keep doubling it until it covers the awful cost of this industry on society. Double Tobacco Tax every year as well.

(tap tap tap) Earth to hendo, first a double disolution would scare the pants off labour. Next time there will be no Howard for the howard haters to hate. If the swing against labour as seen in the byelections and NT was in the next Fed Election then this would be a one term Govt. The tax on RTD just make drinkers buy cheaper full strength spirit. if they made the tax proportional to alcohol content then it would be equitable. what do they have for balanced opinion on the planet you are from?

When the statistics showed that alcohol was up the seasons were to blame and now you've pulled stats from nowhere and say this tax has worked, the seasons just happen to no longer have a role in the issue? What about ALL forms of alcohol use, not just spirits substitution? What about the surge in drug use as a result of this tax? What about the hospital costs and damage that straight spirits cause? What about the rise in drink spiking that will occur as a result of the tax in clubs and pubs?
