Howard wishes Costello happy birthday, but that's it

14/08/2008 9:35:00 PM.  | Richard Maxton with AAP

Former prime minister John Howard has wished his former heir apparent Peter Costello a happy birthday, but won't comment on whether the former treasurer should replace Liberal leader Brendan Nelson.

Mr Costello is expected to say what he plans to do once his memoirs are published next month but his silence on the leadership issue has put Dr Nelson under mounting pressure.

Dr Nelson is on a 10-day overseas tour and has been faring poorly in opinion polls.

Mr Howard went to Canberra today to receive a Companion of the Order of Australia and while he was happy to talk to reporters, he didn't want to comment about the Liberal Party leadership.

"I continue to have a very happy life, you move on," Mr Howard said.

"It was an enormous experience and privilege to have been Prime Minister for so long.

"I'm very proud of the fact my government left the country in a stronger, prouder and more prosperous state than it had been in."

But he did effusively wish Mr Costello a happy 51st birthday.

Given his $300,000+ government pension I imagine he has a happy life. Politicians should have to go onto an ordinary pension, that would wipe the smile off the scoundrels face.

Howard has the dignity to remain outside of politics now that he has moved on. Paul Keating should learn from this fine example. And to keep balance, so should Malcolm Fraser learn. Maintaining balance still further (!) Messre Hawke & Whitlam remained fairly quiet after their respective departures. But the worst has to be the Pig Farmer!

howard remains outside of politics because he is an acute embarassment to his party and would hinder their re election prospects

Didnt wipe the smile off Keatings or Hawkes faces, they collected too, as will Mr Rudd. I imagine Mr Rudd will have done even less to deserve his though, after all I believe he will be banished to the wilderness after his first term. Australians are not so docile they wont have become fed up with rhetoric, higher taxes, EFT's, higher cost of living, and job losses, by the next election. Mr Rudd will have done little to deserve his 300,000 at the end of his term, unless he ACTS on promises made.

John who? Thankfully we have a PM now who can see the future - not living in the 70's, walking in the shadow of GWB. As for Costello, how could anyone ever consider this snake in the grass as PM of our great nation? Brendan Nelson is 10 times the man that Imyello is.

Kev 07 is certainly living in the jet age, he has'nt stopped winging his way around Asia since he got the job. His love is Asia and he wants the kids to share his love by learning an Asian language. No doubt Labor leaders have modern gimmick visions - Rudd has the '20/20' summit vision, Hawke the 'Clever Country' (with the eradication of childhood poverty), Latham had the 'Ladder of Success' Beazley had 'Roll Back' and Keating had the 'Big Picture'. Simon Crean appeared as just fair dinkum.

susan- You forgot about that other destroyer of the economy-Gough-he has been enjoying the perks for a long time now. John Howard deserves his he earned it by improving our lot. People like Gough should not have been paid the pension - they should have been awarded demerit points. Rob I - says that Rudd can see into the future-that about sums him up-he’s clairvoyant but cannot do anything about the present.
