Howard : 'I would've been seen as a coward'

16/08/2008 6:26:00 PM.  |
Former Prime Minister John Howard believes he would have been seen as "a coward" if he had stepped down voluntarily for Peter Costello but would have quit had a delegation of senior ministers demanded him to.

Senior Liberal strategist Andrew Robb told Mr Howard that the coalition was headed for a "train wreck" as he attempted to convince Mr Howard to step aside for Mr Costello last year, a report says.

But Mr Howard told the minister that while he was pessimistic about the election, he "had more show of winning than Peter" and that history would regard him as "a coward" if he stepped down voluntarily, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

A number of senior Liberals tried to convince Mr Howard to step down as PM before the November 24 poll.

A crisis meeting of cabinet ministers during the September APEC summit decided that Mr Howard should step aside but left the decision to him.

In a new interview, Mr Howard said he would have quit had a delegation of senior ministers demanded it.

"I'd have responded to that because they'd have been owning that request," Mr Howard said.

Mr Howard's views and those of other key figures are contained in an essay by Sydney Institute executive director Gerard Henderson.

The essay is being published in the August edition of the Sydney Institute Quarterly with an extract appearing in today's Herald, for which Mr Henderson is a columnist.

Mr Robb, who masterminded Mr Howard's 1996 election victory, had attempted to convince Mr Howard to step aside for Mr Costello, in an exchange in September.

"He spent 30 minutes telling me Peter couldn't win, he had more show of winning than Peter," Mr Robb said.

"I found none of it compelling. I spent 30 minutes putting my case and he spent 30 minutes responding."

Mr Howard told Mr Henderson that the party as a whole never made its view clear.

"If my senior colleagues were, as a group, prepared to own a request for me to go, I'd have gone," he said.

"But I was not going to, out of the blue, go because I didn't think that would have produced a different result and that I would have rightly been criticised for cowardice."

Oh how the lies continue. Howard trying to worm and squirm his way out of accepting responsibility for destroying the Liberal party. It's everybody else's fault, don't blame me, it wasn't my history of lying about; GST, Kids Overboard, Weapons of Mass Destruction, standing aside for Runawaycrybaby Costello. Howard stunk that much in the end he lost his own seat. And as for being a coward, that is exactly what he is... Bugger off ya coward.

Henderson...the "King Of Squirming" sitting in judgement on one of Australia's greatest PM's. Regardless of your political persuasion you'd have to admire Howard's dignity vs the foul mouth of Keating. The foul mouth of Henderson opens at every opportunity.

You can't help yourself, can you, Gra Gra? And such a good Anglo-Celtic boy. Where did you go wrong? Times tough and idle in the countryside? Howard's perfectly correct, again, of course, but I know that won't stop you and your mates clanging your cymbals. The Liberals missed by a very small margin, dancing TV McKewpie Doll notwithstanding. GST is good for a service economy; Iraq/WMD was a precautionary act, & Kids Scuttled? Ha! Economic migrants skipping over Asia, obviously. PS It's "stank".

Geoff Bolton, You know Howard is a coward, he has taken this country to the brink, and was cowardly in bowing to big business pressure and continues to lie about the circumstances of his stay as leader of the Liberal Party he destroyed, which was an egotistical act on his part. Howard is a small man with a big ego and Kama will eventually have it's way. Perhaps you could look at yourself aswell.

Paul Just-So you sat in on all Liberal Party discussions- you know and can prove what you are saying? You are insulting the people of Australia that voted for this man four times. Cowards don't tell the people, before an election, that he is going to introduce a GST. Cowards like Rudd introduce Taxes and measures after the Election. We had a strong robust economy under the Coalition for over a decade Rudd the Dudd and Swan dive have ruined it in less than 9 months. Go and give yourself an upper cut-you have earned it.

Once again we see GH venting his spleen devoid of any analytical thought. Reading your many missives on all matters on this site GH, I have come to the realisation that Krudd has acheived at least one promise that he made to the people of Australia in your electorate if nowhere else....

Howard was dammed no matter what he did. At the time, people hated Costello with a passion, many were over Howard too. The reality is that Howard lost in a big part to a massive union funded campaign that spread complete lies about workchoices, and people believed it. Similarly interest rates rose in the very month of the election, & the ridicuous interest rate arguments started. The political conundrum is - how do have an educated debate on policy when most of the country isn't educated?

Good to see the usual 80 year old rusted-on Howard-loving morons here, which is 2GB's core audience alongside the fool Parrot Jones, try to shift the blame onto Kevin Rudd for Howard's 12 years of inaction and deceit. He should be in the war crimes tribunal.

Mark, with respect - I think its only you and "foul mouth" Henderson stillk peddling the anti-Howard line. History is beginning to show that we wern't in too bad a position under the Coalition. Its going to take a long time just to repair Swan's screw up of the past 9 months.

Very simple to determine that he is a coward---he's got no balls. So much on the nose that even a complete unknown novice politician took his seat. The most hated Australian PM in history. How could any one with any sort of decency use destitute children to their own gain, & now the Haneef case will show how low he was prepared to go. What a lowlife.

Again all these pathetic blind labor voters discharging junk. If there is a group of people who is LEAST qualified to comment on this it's these lowly educated labor diehards. KRudd is bringing the country down to a near recession & yet labor supporters have face to blame/comment/criticise the previous government who achieved economic prosperity for all Australians (except for labor supporters who are typically bludgers & relying on government for handouts). God forbid how shameless they are.

Minto, you said what I have not been gutsy enough to say."The political conundrum is - how to have an educated debate on policy when most of the country isn't educated?" Hit the nail on the head, and we cannot wonder why. Our Education system has been hijacked over the last 35 yrs, and until we begin to EDUCATE and not indoctrinate, the situation wont improve. Debate is opposing opinions discussing a topic , wth RESPECT, and maybe learning something from each other.I have yet to see this here.

The biggest issue with EDUCATION, is not everyone is suited to the system we have. Why do we enforce a person to go to school for 12+yrs, if educators know the person isnt capable of absorbing the info? If a person is good with his hands, put him into a relevent field, good with maths etc, then carry on educating. free's up resources and learning rates will increase. Some are just not cut out for calss room mentality. Educated debate? How about plain english and no Bullshit?

John Howard actually believed that he, and only he, could lead the COALition to victory. When he was advised to leave he didn't and he says that the reason is that he wasn't advised in the right way. Howard got one thing right, Costello couldn't win the election. But it was his failure to turn the Haneef case into another Kid's Overboard/ Tampa affair and frighten the electorate again, I believe it's called "Ctying Wolf". Howard's dishonesty got him. Not a coward? Not an honest man!

Based on Costello's popularity now there's a chance the odds could have been better for the Coalition if Howard had stepped down, but I doubt it. I think people want to see stability in the political parties, and Howard was a stable candidate for Prime Minister, more so than Costello at the time.

Graeme, I dont think it was cowardice that got him. More I think it was a case of OVERT ARROGANCE. he man suffered from "I'm a GOD sysndrome". Other than that, he did ok. In fact, as far as i can tell, in my own "un-educated' way, i reckon the libs/nat did bloody well in the time they held office. I dont agree wtih all they did or didnt do, however to pan the govt for all they did achieve, that's rather childish. Not all of the yrs they had was doom n gloom. So far our KRUDD team is yet to work?
