Unions campaign against power sell-off

16/08/2008 6:18:00 PM.  | AAP
Unions NSW today stepped up its campaign against electricity privatisation.

More than 55 union stalls have been set up at shopping centres and fairs across the state, urging communities to contact local MPs and sign a petition against the proposed sale.

On Thursday, one of the chief proponents of the plan, NSW Treasurer Michael Costa, was confronted by firefighters in Wollongong who were protesting over a pay rise.

NSW Premier Morris Iemma last week met the union-dominated state ALP administrative committee in an attempt put an end infighting over the issue.

Unions NSW spokesman Matt Thistlewaite said today electricity privatisation would be the primary consideration when the state parliament resumes.

"We've got six weeks to convince local MPs that this proposal is not in the interests of the people of NSW and remind them of the promise that they gave in the lead up to the last election to maintain public ownership of electricity assets in NSW," Mr Thistlewaite told reporters.

He said that over time public schools, public utilities and consumers would be paying more for electricity.

When even Labour state governments tell the unions to take a running jump-then you realise what a pathetic basket-case unions have become. The current ACTU has overseen the most dramatic reduction in union membership in Aussie history & what is left have also given up . Casual jobs, contract cheap foreign labour, housing affordability, wage freezing, discrimination , standard of living dropping each year--& to think that those left in unions still have their fees increased.
