Schwarzer off to shaky start as Fulham loses

17/08/2008 11:40:00 AM.  |
Mark Schwarzer has endured a shaky start to the English Premier League season with his new club Fulham losing 2-1 to debutants Hull City.

Despite some impressive saves by the towering Australian goalkeeper, Hull came from behind to clinch a dream victory in the final minutes of their first ever Premiership match.

Before a packed KC Stadium, Hull piled on the pressure from the start with winger and Socceroo hopeful Richard Garcia having an early shot at goal but failing to head in a cross from Andy Dawson.

Moments later Schwarzer swung into action with a dramatic full-length dive to stop a header from Hull's Brazilian striker Geovanni before scrambling to block a quick follow-up from Ian Ashbee.

Fulham's Seol Ki-Hyeon took the pressure off the visitors in the eighth minute with an angled header into the bottom left corner.

But Geovanni struck back and equalised with a curling left-footed shot around Schwarzer before the half-time whistle.

After the break, Schwarzer produced a fine low save to stop another attempt by Garcia off a cross from Peter Halmosi.

With just nine minutes to go, substitute Caleb Folan provided a thrilling finish for the hosts by side-footing home the winner.

Hull's manager Phil Brown described his side's win as "fantastic".

"The fan's have certainly gone home with a smile on their faces," he told the BBC.

Schwarzer's decision during the summer break to end his 11-year stint at Middlesbrough and sign with Fulham paved the way for fellow Australian Brad Jones to step up as Boro's 'keeper for their 2-1 win over Tottenham at the Riverside Stadium.

David Wheater opened the scoring for the hosts in the 71st minute before Mido made it 2-0 with four minutes to go.

A late own goal by Robert Huth provided the only consolation for Spurs.

Elsewhere, West Ham's captain Lucas Neill led his teammates to a 2-1 victory over Wigan Athletic.
