Liberal frontbencher refuels nuclear debate

19/08/2008 11:26:00 AM.  | Gil Taylor and LIVENEWS.com.au
The nuclear debate has been re-opened with a key opposition frontbencher saying it can't be ignored.

Shadow Trade Minister Ian MacFarlane is expected to tell industry heavyweights nuclear has to be seriously considered if Australia is to cut greenhouse gases.

Mr MacFarlane is the first MP to make such strong pro-nuclear remarks since John Howard was Prime minister.

He stressed that if the country was serious about cutting greenhouse gases, nuclear is an option that can’t be ignored, saying coal-fired generation would be deadlier.

Climate Change Minister Penny Wong says his comments show the coalition is returning to form when it comes to the nuclear debate.

“Mr Nelson and the Coalition needs to come clean. Are they really saying that they have a plan for 25 nuclear reactors in Australia?

“Where are they going to put them? They need to come clean to the Australian people about their plans for nuclear power.”

Labor Party say No to Nuclear power here. Fair enough their choice yes? If this is the stance then Whats the go with India? India want Uranium but dont want to sign the NPT. Docs. Usa Want them passed anyway so as to pick up Contracts. Dont be coy Ms Wong. Your Govt needs to object at the meeting until India sign. We can Sell this stuff to the world but NOT use it ourselves? The Hypocrisy is pathetic. If we're serious about ecology then we should use it Here and develope it here too

So the Libs do have a policy on something. 25 Nuclear reactors, so let's see 5 in Sydney, 4in Melbourne, 2 in Adelaide, 2 in Perth, 2 in Brisbane, 1 in Newcastle, 1 in Geelong, 1 in Cairns, 1 in Gosford, 1 in Wollongong, 2 in Canberra, 2 more for Sydney and 1 more for Melbourne. The good thing is that to reduce transmission loss these things can be put right in the communities that need them. I can see this policy will be a real vote winner. No wonder they haven't come clean on this policy

Ian MacFarlane good on you. Penny Wong is a hypocrite just like her leader Kevin Rudd. They have gone around scaring the people about the dire consequences of climate change and yet they keep on allowing the export of fossil fuels to Countries that are adding copious amounts of greenhouse gases to into the atmosphere. If the Climate change believers are correct then isn't it a better bet to use nuclear energy, with the hope of finding a safe method of storing or converting the waste, than to fry ourselves with the continued use of fossil fuels.

Belinda Hummie-And the next Coal fired one can be in your backyard.

Don't worry Desmond, Belinda is getting the next gas powered one and the pipe line is being built past here right now. Nuclear is no solution, it is expensive and there is no safe way of storing the waste. Unfortunately there is so much corrupt money in the nuclear industry that the likes of Howard and McFarlane can simply be bought. As if McFarlane actually knows anything that the Nuclear Industry didn't program him with. Nuclear is the only thing dirtier than coal.

Carol Lyn. I object to Uranium mining, transport, storage, sale and use. You are welcome to go to Europe, goodbye. Nuclear Power is not cheap, it has never been cheap, one of the great lies was that it would be so cheap you couldn't charge for it. The fact is that it is that expensive you can't afford it. Show me where it is cheap, show me that you are not just another stooge of the nuclear industry spreading their lies. How much will it cost to store the waste for 250000 years?

Storage isnt the biggest issue.250k yrs is not the time line needed either graeme. Sweden has a brilliant vault that seems to be going ok at present. Storage is an issue because of stigma/ emotion and uneducated blather. Thing is somethng like this should be done by the govt. not private concerns. from top to bottom it needs to be a federal system. It may not be clean, it could be cheaper than other countries if we stop selling yellow cake and processed here. It wont clag the atmosphere with co2

if just a fraction of the money spent today building nuclear and other weapons and blowing countries up.. was redirected towards research and development in new technologies for power including wind, solar, geothermal, running cars on water etc etc etc.. the world could feed ,clothe, house and energise everyone.. we can do without nuclear waste hanging about for who knows how long and at who knows what cost.. we can do much better.
