Nelson to blame if alcopops tax fails: Roxon

20/08/2008 1:44:00 PM.  | AAP
The federal government has again sought to place pressure on Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson over the passage of its proposed alcopops tax through the Senate.

The coalition has flagged it will oppose a raft of Labor's budget measures, including a tax hike on ready-to-drink alcoholic beverages, aimed at curbing binge drinking.

Without coalition support, Labor needs to convince the seven balance of power senators - independent Nick Xenophon, Family First's Steve Fielding, and five Australian Greens - to back its legislation.

Senator Xenophon has indicated he is likely to block the so-called alcopops tax without major changes to the policy.

Asked if Senator Xenophon's stance meant the alcopops tax was dead in the water in its current form, Health Minister Nicola Roxon said the fate of the legislation was in Dr Nelson's hands.

"No, this is still clearly a decision that should be made by Dr Nelson," Ns Roxon told reporters in Perth.

"If Dr Nelson would actually get on board he could help us tackle what is a serious social problem in the community."

Ms Roxon said the tax office reported a 23 per cent reduction in spirit sales since the measure was put in place.

"That is a lot of alcohol in anybody's terms and I think Dr Nelson should reconsider his position," she said.

"Of course we'll talk with all of the senators, but ultimately it will be on Dr Nelson's head if this measure is not supported, and he needs to start explaining what the health impact will be if he stops this measure going ahead."

Ms Roxon said the government already had been talking with the five Greens and two independent senators, but would not outline which aspects of the tax were up for negotiation.

"Ms Roxon said the tax office reported a 23 per cent reduction in spirit sales since the measure was put in place." - how utterly disingenious Ms Roxon... of course sales of spirits have dropped by 23% ... cause all the kids are now drinking GOON... !!! Yeah, the alcopop tax is really working - NOT... Yet another sneaky tax!!

If Govt. was serious about Binge drinkling they would have Banned the adding of Guarana, Vig and other silly go fast go hard additives first. All this dribble about Nelson this Nelson that shows the lack of Spine behind the the tax grab. Why not be honest KRUDD n CO, this is more about paying for pre ellec. promises than anything else. If the Govt was serious about Binge drinking then the Alcohol/gaming inspectors would be out fining establishments for serving INTOXICATED PATRONS. More dribble

I agree, Nelson should take all the credit for scuttling this blatent tax grab. Nothing to do with kids binge drinking because the majority of pre mixed drinkers are blue collar tradies (they used to be Labor voters!). Good on yer, Nelson.

It is quite possible that, if the figures have gone down, it is because of the general economic slowdown and lack of consumer confidence. A situation that has only come about since Labor took office. It does not mean ,because the Tax Department report won't give the detail, that the young people, that are the target of the Alcopop Tax grab, are drinking any less. Nicola Roxon the figures that you keep quoting do not have any validity.

Des, i have recently left the Hospitality industry( bottleshop), I have many friends in the Industry today, all say the samething about sales at present. Things are slow across the board, then this industry has patterns that cycle with Holiday periods. Guarana, vig, redbull mixes are bad as they work like an Amphetamine in the system. The alcohol is second to the effect of the stimulant.Mixed with loud music and flashes of light, it helps in brining on agression. This is only about money for GUV.

I agree with the tax but ONLY becasue it fixes an annomoly in taxation. The claims that it reduces binge drinking I think are ridiclous, and so I agree 100% with the comments by Des, Carol lyn and Nick. The only thing i can add is that none of these "stats" take into account drugs. I know many late teens that have simply increased there marajuana or ecstasy usage (depending on where their going) rather than buying alcopops. I'm sure others have simply found a different alternative.

The truth comes out now Mr Swan and Ms Roxon, the only reason you implemented this tax was a reasoning for the budget surplus not for the health and wellbeing of our youth, as stated by Mr Swan. Your disregard for our youths safety at the expense of making money is disgraceful, turning our children to drugs and spirits just to keep your budget surplus up, whilst accusing the people lobbying against this tax of been selective in their information whilst you selective based your decision to implement the tax on one report and the creators of that report have even stated that there is no link between RTD's and binge drinking. I'm pleased Dr Nelson and the independents are doing the right thing for our youth so far, lets hope they hold on.
