Australia must wait until the weekend before the International Cricket Council (ICC) decides whether to host the ill-fated Champions Trophy tournament in Pakistan next month.
Even if the ICC takes the extraordinary step of relocating the tournament to Sri Lanka, there are doubts Australia will commit to visiting the alternate venue because of security concerns.
The ICC board will discuss the venue issue on Sunday, having decided last month to stick with Pakistan.
But faced with having this year's most prestigious one-day tournament cut in half as Australia, England, New Zealand and South Africa prepare to boycott, the ICC might decide to make a last-ditch effort at enticing those countries by shifting the event to Sri Lanka.
But even Sri Lanka presents major security concerns, as the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has issued an advisory not to visit because of the "very high risk of politically motivated violence".
The DFAT website states the conflict between the Sri Lankan government and Tamil Tigers has escalated since January, and that attacks in Colombo have "become more frequent and have killed many civilians".
The Australian Cricketers' Association (ACA) has recommended to its members that Pakistan is not safe to tour, and also has concerns about Sri Lanka.
If the tournament is shifted to Sri Lanka, the ACA would need to visit the country to inspect security arrangements.
The tournament is scheduled to be played from September 12-28.
India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the West Indies are the countries definitely taking part.
Last week an ICC delegation met in Melbourne with Cricket Australia and ACA officials, and Australian captain Ricky Ponting and vice-captain Michael Clarke, however the meeting failed to allay Australia of their concerns.
A Cricket Australia spokesman said the organisation was waiting for the ICC to rule on the tournament venue.
"The ball's in the ICC's court, so we're just waiting until the weekend," he said.
Ponting today said the players were hopeful of learning more about the situation on the weekend, after the ICC board meeting.
