Rudd in need of a geography lesson

28/08/2008 9:10:00 PM.  |
It seems Prime Minister Kevin Rudd may be in need of a geography lesson.

The prime minister has been busy talking up his education revolution in recent days, unveiling a new plan to ensure schools lift their performance.

But tonight, while discussing the economy, he seemed unaware of a basic fact that many school children would likely know - that Australia is an island and is often referred to as an island continent.

"Australia is not an island," Mr Rudd said tonight on ABC television.

He was, of course, suggesting Australia was facing many of the same economic challenges confronting other countries.

"We're going through difficult economic times," the prime minister went on to say.

Kevin Rudd is quite correct. Australia is a continent NOT an island. From a geographical point of view it is either one or the other. Many people, especially journalists, often refer to Australia as 'The Island Continent' (even Colin Sale in his Australian Geography text) but the term is merely a colloquialism.

"We're going through difficult economic times," the prime minister went on to say". WOW !!!! Costello told you before the last election there would be hard economic times ahead Mr Rudd, that it would need sound economic management. You said it was a scare tactic, YOU could fix it all....UUmmmm...when are you likely to start fixing it please , you have been WATCHING it now for 10 months. OHH and Australia is an Isalnd Mr Rudd, not sure about its future now though. Even ABC's Kerry wonders now.

I'm Just amazed he hasnt gotten back onto the plane? I mean, he's been back almost a week, he's being asked questions that have to do with this country. Wont be long, he'll pop off again. As for his Education scheme, does this mean teachers will be able to fail students again, or does it mean ALL kids will be Near genius so as to get the funding into the school? Interesting no ones popped this to him?

We faced a lot of difficult economic times, domestically and internationally, under the Coalition but never did we see such low levels of Business and Consumer confidence. Rudd keeps running with the lie that the Coalition's good record of economic management was simply due to the resources boom. Well guess what? we still have the resources boom, our large companies are securing record high prices for our exports, and yet the economy is under stress with Rudd and Labor. Why can’t he run a decent economy during the resources boom?

Do the school know if australia is an island or a continent? At school they told us 1 or the other. Different answers from different teachers. If a continent then that means more than 1 country on this so called continental island with school telling 2 different answers.
