Two-headed baby dies at home

28/08/2008 9:21:00 PM.  | Nick Markham
A child born with two heads has died because his parents were unable to afford adequate medical treatment.

The Bangladeshi boy named Kiron was born on Monday, but News Limited reports the boy died at home late yesterday because his parents could not afford the costs associated with ongoing medical care.

According to pediatrician KS Alam, Kiron died after developing a fever and breathing difficulties, after the child's parents ignored medical advice to keep Kiron under medical care.

"We wanted to refer him to a hospital in Dhaka but the family was so poor that they could not afford to take him there, so they took him home where he died," Dr Alam said.

"It was a very unusual case. The boy had one body but two complete heads."

The birth of Kiron had attracted a phenomenal amount of attention, with a reported 150,000 Bangladeshi's gathering at the clinic in Keshobpur where Kiron was born.

Police were needed to control the crowds, before Kiron was moved to a hospital in nearby Jessore city.

This story highlights, for me why poverty is the highest priority thing that the UN should be opposing. Instead, the UN is chasing the myth of global warming.

I don't believe this story for a moment. It is an outright lie. Something this phenomenal would and should have drawn the governemnt of Bangladesh into the mix early on. If it didn't, those people are too stupid to even be called people. And, that's why I disbelieve the story. There is more to it that is not being reported or told. I mean, there must have been donations to the family from the get-go.

Well here's the problem. If each of the 150,000 that gathered at the clinic to see the child gave donated 50 cents they would have had $75,000 and could well have afforded sending the baby to Dhaka.

Well See here lies the bigger problem. Bangladesh has a massive population, no welfare, not many people live above poverty. Pauline, if you supported your family on app. $5.00/ mnth would you be able to find the 50 cents? I believe also that these birth defects maybe a touch more common then we hear in our comfortable little worlds. Not everyone in the world has it as good as we have here, or in the USA. Some people JUST DONT have the resources to donate.

I don't know why you wouldn't beleive this story Pauline. You may not be aware just how poverty stricken bangladesh is. How can the government "step in" when almost the entire bangladeshi population is poverty stricken? Where do they start? where are the resources? These people live on a dollar a week (if that) and not just for one person, but an entire family. Get out of your "bubble" and see the real world.

I'm surprised that the fundamentalist christians didnt run around screaming that a two headed person is a harbringer of armagedon and say "god killed the demon baby"...when there is a two headed girl born in America....Poor girl, I can imagine christians trying to stuff up her mind calling her a 'demon' Pathetic world we live in!
