Disabled Sydney man severely bashed, suspect found in Hong Kong

29/08/2008 6:49:00 AM.  | AAP
A 74-year-old man has been arrested in Hong Kong the day after a savage stabbing attack on an elderly couple in Sydney.

Police say the couple were attacked just before 8am (AEST) yesterday in their home at Beverly Hills, in Sydney's southwest.

They say the 71-year-old woman answered a knock on the front door of the Warraroong Street house while the 80-year-old, who is confined to a wheelchair, was in the bathroom.

"Police will allege the woman was greeted by a 74-year-old man who entered the home ... (and) then assaulted the woman with a weapon before proceeding to the bathroom and assaulting the wheelchair-bound man," NSW Police Force says in a statement today.

"As a result of the incident, the man and woman both sustained multiple stab wounds to their backs, heads and chests."

They were admitted to St George Hospital where they remain in a serious but stable condition.

Police say their investigation focussed on a man who boarded an international flight from Sydney, and an arrest warrant was sent to authorities in Hong Kong.

The 74-year-old man was arrested as he arrived at Hong Kong Airport about 1am today.

He was taken into custody and is expected to appear before an extradition hearing in a Hong Kong court today.

He is expected to be returned to NSW next week.

In response to the comments from the US of A, I suggest we are slowly learning such behaviour from our premier role models on continental Nth America! Look in your own newspapers before using a weak attempt at wit or sarcasm about Australian issues. It is worthy to not that such crimes are so infrequent that they warrant media attention as opposed to other counrties where they are so common as to be deemed not worthy of coverage.
