Over 300 people have raced up 1,504 stairs today to conquer an Australian landmark in the Annual Sydney Tower Run-up.

The event, which raised money for the Heart Foundation, sees runners of all ages fighting their way to the top of the tower.

Third time winner of the men's category, ACT runner Scott McTaggart, managed to beat his own best time, sweating it out in just under eight minutes.

"I really gutsed it out today ... it was definitely a tough run, probably the hardest I have run on the stairs so far," Mr McTaggart said.

The 31-year-old said he was fighting his way up the stairs in second place for a while.

"It's ... not a bad way to go because you probably start off a bit easier than potentially what you would run ... you might have a little bit left at the end," he said.

It was third time lucky for winner of the women's section Jessamy Hosking, also from the ACT.

The 25-year-old had come in third twice before today's win, crossing the finish line at the tower's observation level just under nine-and-a-half minutes.

The event raised money for the Heart Foundation, with funds from each race entry fee going to the charity.

Among the competitors puffing their way up the tower were Biggest Loser contestant Garry Guerreiro, Nova radio presenter Mel Femia and Heart Foundation ambassador Andrew Rochford.

The men's and women's category winners won return tickets to New York City to compete in the annual Empire State Building Run Up in February 2009.
