Police pursuit ends in dramatic arrest

29/08/2008 5:00:00 PM.  | Richard Maxton
Police have arrested two armed men at gunpoint following a dramatic high speed pursuit through Newcastle's suburbs.

Dozens of armed police surrounded the stolen car in the heart of Newcastle's CBD around midday, pulling two armed men from vehicle and ordering to the ground to be handcuffed.

The arrest followed an hour long police pursuit which began after the men were spotted by police on a suburban street.

The men were reportedly wanted in relation to a string of armed robberies in Newcastle and the Hunter.

Witnesses saw police pin the men to the ground, handcuffing them before leading them to waiting police vehicles.

One witness told News Ltd the swift arrest reminded him of an action movie.

“I’ve never seen anything like it … police everywhere, guns drawn … I couldn’t believe it,” the witness said.

One of the men allegedly struggled against police, but was quickly subdued.

“They (the police) stood on his head to keep it down ... it was awesome,” the witness said.

A police spokesman said more details would be made available once the men had been charged.

Caln down, Michael. Take a deep breath. You only have to tell us once. We can read. I can appreciate how excited you must be to be a witness to this drama. I hope that in your excitement you don't forget to do your homework tonight.
