It’s believed the last remaining Australian digger unaccounted for after the Vietnam war has been found.

A search team has uncovered a grave believed to belong to Special Air Services Regiment soldier Private David Fisher who went missing in southern Vietnam in 1969.

He fell from a rope hanging from a helicopter in 1969 and was never found.

An investigation team has uncovered an identification tag and bones after pinpointing a burial area in the Cam My region.

Defence Personnel Minister Warren Snowdon said they are waiting for official confirmation before Private Fisher is brought home.

“We will have the remains returned to us and repatriated to Australia so we can accord Private Fisher the honour that he justly deserves and provide his family and the Australian community, an opportunity to acknowledge his service to the nation, his courage and the ultimate sacrifice that he’s made.”
