McCain chooses Sarah Palin as VP

30/08/2008 1:37:00 PM.  | Victoria Owens & Rhys Sain

US Democratic Presidential hopeful Barack Obama has welcomed his opponent's choice of a woman as his running mate.

The US will make history at this year's election Senator Obama will become the nation's first black President, or Sarah Palin will become its first female Vice President.

The 44-year-old, and Governor of Alaska has been chosen by John McCain in his run for the White House.

Barack Obama says the decision is a step forward for the women's movement.

“The fact that you’ve got a woman as the nominee for Vice President of one of the major parties is one more hit against that glass ceiling and I congratulate her and look forward to a vigorous debate.”

Senator McCain says Ms Palin has the experience necessary for the job.

“I’ve found someone with an outstanding reputation for standing up to special interests and entrenched bureaucracy.”

“Someone who has fought against corruption and the failed policies of the past,” he said.

“Someone who has stopped government from wasting tax payers’ money.”

“Someone with executive experience.”

White House Press Secretary Dana Perino says President George Bush gave Governor Palin a congratulatory call.

“He said the McCain/Palin ticket is very strong, he wished her good luck, told her she would be a fantastic vice-presidential candidate and that he is looking forward to a great victory in November.”

Is that right Mr McCain, well I would hope if you are elected that your 2ic will look into the billion dollar black hole created by cost plus contracts awarded in Iraq and how the Pentagon and others allowed this corrupt usage of Americans tax dollars . Alas I think not, wouldn't want to rock the boat and expose the enormous amount of corruption that has been the staple of the Bush administration.

She is an inspired choice. When the Democrats start one of their hate campaigns, they will find themselves hitting themselves on the same issues. Yet she is conservative. She is a capable leader. And she is pretty.

Strange the lop sided media reporting between these two US candidates for president. Obama rating the most media exposure....I have a feeling we will see another media led election in the US as we had here last Nov. Hmmm, Obama even uses the term "working families", cutting taxes for all, blah blah blah. Another pollie , same rhetoric.

You have got it pretty right here Susan however for the wrong reasons. Obama is just another pollie, just like McCain , Clinton and Bush for that matter because he is where he is because the same people that put them in power are behind him. What most people here and in the States are not fully aware of is just how close Obama is to the real power brokers. The information is out there but is difficult to find due to media controls. The recent Bilderburg meeting must have been a cracker.

A young Alaskan woman, married to an Eskimo. His grandmother, is Yup'ik (indigenous peoples of Alaska), has 5 children, and not from the Hollywood celebs clique, sounds ok to me. Might do the Whitehouse good to have a down to earth female inside for a change. She might even give Mrs Obama some competition in the media hype now, make for some different rhetoric at least.Who knows , she might even do a little for Native Americans, you know them ?...the ones Obama has yet to mention.

McCain's done well if he can grab some more media attention. The media so far have been giving so much more fanfare to Obama, it's incredibly biased. Ladies and Gentlemen, our Media Emperors have chosen: Obama for President. I'm tired of McCain being picked on for his age. We're all ageing every day! It's great he's picked 1. A woman, 2. a candidate from a state that often gets ignored on the US scene, 3. She seems confident and smart, and 4. It's gender balancing! Yay!

allrepublicans r bad. mccain is racist & Reagan was a liar and you know that. You have heard of the IRAN CONTRA AFFAIR?! Reagan prepped for months with his attorneys for the trial and then lied "I DON"T RECALL" he lied. He was far more currupt than Nixon even and will go down as the worst president behind the bush family who has done the greatest harm to the USA. Reagan gave weapons to Iran to get the hostages back, behind Carter's back. Ronnie is the spawn of the DEVIL with 666 on his bottom.

Pizza, Mcain would be proud that you mentioned him being the same as Reagan. Reagan was , and is touted, as one of the greatest Presidents of all time.I guess you wouldnt have liked him though , he had the guts to enact welfare reform LOL. No more life time welfare payments. As for the Alaskan oil, the US has finally woken up to the fact they have their own oil resources, and are willing to drill for it..Palin is a great choice, may even have time for the USA"s first people, Native Americans

the governor of alaska, the former mayor of '' wasilla'' and an active member of her childrens PTA ? is this really enough political experience to be a hairs breadth from running america. the problems she faces at a PTA meeting will hardly reach the complexities of the israel palestinian situation. she has only got experience in being ''inexperienced''.
