Three teenagers killed in Perth crash

30/08/2008 11:00:00 AM.  |
Police say speed played a part in the death of three teenagers when a BMW hit a tree at a Perth intersection.

Two youths and a girl, all aged 17, died after their sedan slammed into a tree as they passed the High Street intersection on Vahland Avenue in the southeastern suburb of Riverton around 9pm (WST).

A female passenger, also 17, is in a serious condition in the Sir Charles Gardiner Hospital with head and internal injuries.

"It appears speed was a contributing factor," police spokesman Ian Hasleby said.

He said there was a 70km/h speed limit in the area.

Police say the BMW slid sideways and crashed into a large tree on the median strip after passing the intersection, which is controlled by traffic lights.

I arrived at the crash shortly after it happened. It was completely heart breaking to see how what seemed like a simple joy ride could take the lives of teenagers such as myself, and in such a sudden way. My thoughts and hopes go out to the love ones effected so dramatically by this. I would also like to note how the perth emergency units, such as the police and paramedics were so prompt and reliable.

I am extremely saddened, angry and frustrated by these deaths. I must say that I do not agree with Nicola's comment of "a simple joy ride". "Joy rides are not simple" they are killers as is evidenced almost every week on our roads. Where does a 17 year old get the funds to purchase a BMW. If not the owner who gave it to the driver to use. How irresponsible. Also the sooner we stop more than 2 people being driven by a P plater the better. I feel for those left behind as well.

Until our Govts, in their High wisdom, wake up and make Defensive driving tests mandatory, this sort of thing will continue to happen. My condolances to the parents and Affected. Sad loss. When ANYONE has an official in a car with them you wont get the same person doing the test as the person with freinds. No Way will a driving instructor appreciate your child having a car sideways. Def.Driving will teach your children to react accordingly. This could have been the diff. in this case.

My children learnt to drive with a driving school and with me. They both said "Mum, the driving instructor doesn't teach us that - we don't need to know it." I replied "He's teaching you to pass your test, I'm teaching you to stay alive." Crashes happen in a split second. Speed is usually a factor. Why do we have cars that do 200 kmph when the speed limit is 110kmph? I've always said young people shouldn't drive high performance cars.

"What a waste of young life".Education is the way to stop this...Everyone knows there is a bump thru that intersection...Just a 17 yo travelling at speed who doesnt know what to do when car doesnt do what it should... Brake, Accelerate...both...turn...what now??? Teach them Young...Defensive driving classes...Make the government pay for young people to have oppertunity to survive. Better than deaths... I was trained at 17 yo, then 21 and 25. Im a 30 yo male, with high powered cars from 17yo.

Given the circumstances of this crash, I'd hate to think if irresponsibility played a part in this avoidable tragedy

i'm in year twelve and attended school with the victims. its shattering that it takes a tragity like this to realise how stupid speeding is. im certain no one in our year will speed again, it has broken so many hearts, i cannot explain the pain people are going to through at the moment. also, what does having an expensive car have to do with it? how is that irresponsible? it comes down to one thing, speeding kills. they were all amazing, intelligent young people. RIP, you will never be forgotten

Im in year 12 at Corpus Christi and i knew all three people that died, our year is going through hell at the moment, becuase we all just cant believe that something this bad has happened to the people we love. i dont care who's fault the accident was the media should just back off and let the families grieve, i cant believe they had the audacity to show up at the funeral and take pictures of friends and family at the crash site...it sickens me. RIP James, Rosy and Brayden you wont be forgotten..
