Hurricane evacuees are waiting in long lines in New Orleans for buses to get them out of harms way from the impending impact of hurricane Gustav.
The hurricane is growing into a category five has hit Cuba.
Gustav has killed 85 people so far and has already hit cuba at windspeeds of 240 kilometres-per-hour .
Senator Obama urged all New Orleans residents to take all warnings seriously.
"Take the evacuation seriously, even if you've ridden out this storm before, even if you think that it may pass over, even if you think that you can wait until the last minute.
"This is going to be potentially very, very serious."
New Orleans Mayor, Ray Nagin, ordered all the region's people to evacuate the area earlier.
"You need to be scared, you need to be concerned, and you need to get your butts moving out of New Orleans, this is the storm of the century."
Red Cross volunteers are helping with the evacuation of thousands of people.
“We’ve already started helping evacuating some of the disabled and elderly.”
Albert Wilson is fleeing the area and says he's satisfied with the process so far.
“It’s as good as organised.”
“You know, there’s no confusion – I see everything’s in place.”
