Bridge chaos caused by car on wrong side of road

A motorist travelling in the wrong inside lane on the Sydney Harbour Bridge is believed to have caused this morning's horror three vehicle crash.

Police, ambulance crews and the RTA have been praised for the quick response to the smash, which caused major traffic delays in this morning's peak.

Assistant Police Commissioner Catherine Burn, said a north-bound car has merged into the path of an oncoming garbage truck and another car heading south.

"A vehicle was traveling north-bound across the Harbour Bridge and as they got to the middle of the Harbour Bridge they've merged into another lane, lane five, and they've collided with the garbage truck which was coming in the opposite direction."

NSW Premier Morris Iemma has said he understands commuter frustration after this morning's peak-hour horror, but has defended authorities for their handling of the situation.

Trains were also interrupted because a rescue helicopter had to land on the bridge and transport a critically-ill patient to hospital.

Mr Iemma says authorities did all they could to move the wreckage quickly.

“Look, I can understand people’s frustrations,” he said.

“But let’s also remember that there is a man who is critically ill in hospital as a result of a very serious accident.

“The helicopter had been required to respond, the emergency services did respond and respond quickly. The transport management centre swung into action and did so quickly.”

But NSW Nationals leader Andrew Stoner says it's not good enough.

"What we need is an integrated plan which involves notification to commuters early, an early clearance of the wreckage and a greater use of public transport on those days."

I was on the bridge northbound a few minutes after the accident and stuck in the traffic. Before I had got off the bridge, there were police, fire and rescue squad in attendance - the response from the emergency services has to be commended it was excellent. How someone survived the mangled 4WD astounds me. Its a pity those who are whinging dont remember that there but for the grace of god ... at least you are making it home safe and sound tonite.

To be perfectly honest, Ruth, I was caught out on the bridge once. Going north on the big left sweep north of the pylons I moved right into the next lane to pass. No traffic was approaching and it appeared to be a 'north' lane since there were no overhead red crosses nor green arrows in alignment with my lane just there. When I saw a line of traffic approaching I knew I shouldn't have been there!

A set of 'tidal' chaser lights as the current separating dividing line would provide a constant definition of which lane's which. What colour? Blue, brightish, flashing subtly, my vote.

What in the hell is wrong with you people up there...one is whining because he was slowed down because riot Police were called to a party of 1500 , his take, the Police could have organised it better so he wasnt inconvenienced...and now, your whining about an horrific accident on the bridge, holding you up...Thank God it wasnt you in those magled wrecks..perhaps you should volunteer to work for the Ambulance service..Get a life, ....your whinging astounds me.

We need another bridage or some other type of crossing over Sydney harbour. Come on Mr Iemma start a lottery and call it the NEW BRIDAGE LOTTERY, then when you build this bridage have one going north and one south. ( Perhaps it's too hard for you to comprehend)

Seriously, Iemma might be mad, but this is just silly. I was on Epping Road, just after the accident happened, the RTA Big message signs at THAT time said "bridge closed, use Victoria Road" What more can they do?

By sending all traffic to Victoria Road was an absolute nightmare, after an hour after getting on Victoria Road on the southern side of Gladesville bridge, I steadily approached Darling Street Balmain. I empathise completely with those that are victims in any horrific accident but also see the need for improved traffic conditions and until Victoria Road is improved, is pretty much the only other avenue too get to the CBD for most commuters on the west side of town.

NSW Nationals leader Andrew Stoner needs to have a good long hard look at himself with such uneducated comments as "early clearance of the wreckage"... Being a member of the extrication team which removed the casualty from his vehicle..at no stage was it appropriate to clear the wreckage quickly so that commuters could continue their journeys to work. We were all focused on savings a mans life that was hanging in the balance. Priorities please.. Sorry..i forgot i was talking about a politician!

Firie, I am with you. After reading some of the commuters whines here about how inconvenienced they were, I wouldnt wonder Stoner made an uneducated comment..they probably inundated his office with their whinging about being "held up" and "inconvenienced". Some of us appreciate the work the Firies, Police and Ambulance people do, others only know how to whine, and it seems Stoner joined them. Thank you Firie, keep up the good work you all do.
