Police to check drivers' mobiles after car accidents

1/09/2008 8:33:00 AM.  | Victoria Owens
People caught in fatal accidents will now have their mobile phone records checked in a bid to determine the cause of the accident.

Close to 20,000 drivers have been caught on their mobile while behind the wheel in the last year, and police believe the shocking number may be contributing to the states rate of fatal accidents.

Police are now routinely checking the mobile phone records of drivers involved in fatal accidents to see if they were talking or texting at the time of the crash.

Mobile phones have become the number one suspect in crashes involving inattention, and are considered more dangerous than drink driving.

How about the police actually charging unlicensed drivers who cause accidents instead of turning up in disgust and leaving the scene without charging the culprit! - now that would wouldn't be too much to ask would it?
