Andrew Symonds has been betrayed: Dean Jones

Australian cricket legend Dean Jones has gone in to bat for Andrew Symonds, slamming his Australian teammates for throwing the troubled all-rounder "to the dogs".

Symonds has reportedly been ruled out of the upcoming tour of India already and has been told to get psychological help after being dumped from the Australian squad for missing a team meeting - and instead going fishing.

Stand-in captain and one-time close mate Michael Clarke questioned Symonds’s commitment to the team, coach Tim Nielsen said he didn’t know when the all-rounder would return to the squad - and media reports have suggested Symonds may be suffering mental problems.

But the whole scenario has left Jones fuming.

"The saga of it doesn't sit well for me, particularly reading in the papers when journalists put "the Cricket Australia source said this"... and don't put his name to it, saying that he's jot mental problems," said the former Test batsman.

"I think its very mischievous. Typical un-Australian."

Jones insists the penalty far outweighs the crime.

"What's the big deal? Jeff Thomson and Dennis Lillie did some awful things in their time. It's not as if he's hit anyone or racially abused anyone.

"All he's done is miss a team meeting for God's sake, and we tip him home and throw him to the dogs.

"I think it's disgraceful."

Reports regarding Symonds's mental health have angered Jones, who even suggested Symonds take legal action.

"If I was Andrew Symonds I'd be speaking to my lawyer and taking legal action...

"I haven’t heard a word from James Sutherland, the CEO of Cricket Australia... I'm very concerned about so-called leaks coming out Cricket Australia and other people saying "the boy's got mental problems."

But worst of all? The public betrayal by his teammates.

"Is that Michael Clarke trying to push his way as the captain?

"I haven't heard Ricky Ponting say a word as the official captain.

"All he's done is miss a meeting... You don't need a meeting to beat Bangladesh for God's sake."

The squad for Australia’s tour of India in October will be announced on September 13. Symonds is not expected to be named.

Australia cruised past Bangladesh with an eight wicket win in Darwin today to claim the best of three series.

It's been slow in coming but finally some press have stopped blindly following ACB spin and started THINKING!! The whole scenario of Darwin smelt fishy from the start. The sudden team meeting, the wildly extreme punishment, public humiliation by (illegally) escorting him out of Darwin, nauseating comments from Pup, wild allegations from cricket authorities (Punter silent??). Usually they are so careful with their wording. Why the character assassination??? Was legal action already in the wind?

Well stated Jacki! Where are we when our heroes need us? Dean Jones also know what this is about as he was also badly treated in his day. Thanks Dean!

If Andrew Symonds has some problem, then the Cricket association and his team mates should have rallied around him and helped him. Roy has won more games for Australia than almost any current player on the squad, especially Michael Clarke who has really 'betrayed' him. The media are beating up Andrew and the side and no damage control seems to be forthcoming from nayone in the association. where is Ricky Ponting, another so-called mate of Andrew Symonds? Let's get behind Roy!

Andrew you signed a contract which had rules attached with it. You must now pay the penalty for breaking those rules. Like they say Andrew if you can't stand the heat then get out of the kitchen., and give somone else a chance.

You people crack me up. Dean Jones only thinks about himself and generating pubilicy for himself is a spiteful ex-cricketer. Roy did the wrong thing end of story. All he needs to do is apologise to his Teams mates and life goes on. I can't feel sorry for someone who earns excess of $Million dollars year for 6 months work and can't even bother to attend a Team meeting that all of the other players turned up for. Roy doesn't get that it is privelige to play fro Australia.

Everybody has to have their say don't they ??.Well i think Roy is a FANTASTIC cricketer & wonderful to watch . He brings a lot a Charisma to the Aussie Sqad . There must have been reasons for him missing the meeting & really it is his business .I am sure he knows what he is doing . He is not a child . Anyway who wouldn't like to just spend a day fishing . Way to go Roy .

Dee - no one said he wasn't a joy to watch but as usual we get people who feel sorry for these poor overworked Cricketers who are on alot of $$$. Lets feel sorry for the way he has been treated. Maybe only pay him 1/2 this year !

Any thinking person knows that Andrew must still be livid about the lack of support he got following the botched racial slur fiasco during the last India tour of Australia. The team meeting stuff smells of a set-up and I think Andrew should tell them all to shove it, including the "team leadership" group: who need to attend a "how to manage human resources correctly" workshop.

This is Roy's Punishment for being Racially vilified twice. Cricket Australia is standing Solidly by their man, in their usual way. Power hasnt taken long to get to M.CLARKEs' head has it. Symmo knows what his game is, why the beat up because he was fishing? Bangladesh The same Team cricket Australia say are unjustifably in the World Comp. Go figure.
