Hooked on animal rights: Protestor hangs from ceiling

4/09/2008 11:59:00 AM.  | Annika Burgess

A British woman has put hooks through her skin and suspended herself from a shop ceiling, in an extreme protest against cruelty to sharks.

The 26-year-old’s ghastly display was aimed at stopping the practice of finning, which involves slicing fins from sharks, and throwing them back while they’re still alive.

Spectators walking past the London shop watched in shock as blood trickled down Alice Newstead’s back, but the activist claims she wasn’t in any pain.

The 15 minute stunt took place in the window of Lush Cosmetics, on Regent Street, and was organised by the wildlife conservation charity, Sea Shepherd.

"I am doing this because the demand for shark fin soup and other shark products is wiping out the shark population," Newstead told AFP.

"Being hung from the chest is more painful than the back because it restricts your breathing, but as long as the piercer knows what they are doing then it is completely safe."

Lush Cosmetics, who are very public about their fight for animal rights, was also asking consumers to boycott restaurants that serve shark fin soup, and not to use shark cartilage supplements.

I applaud her actions, it's a noble cause and she obviously has the courage of her convictions. I just hope she never decides to use similar tactics to support the movement against female circumcision.

She is a very brave woman. Sharks are caught and have their fins cut off and then are dumped in the sea to die slowly. All for a soup!! There are no limits to what people do to animals just for a particular flavour. So much cruelty goes into foods, and all for ego and greed. Our diets are killing off wildlife and the planet.

yeah peter. that would be funny if it was such a horrible thing. women who get circumcised dont get thrown back into the sea though. i bet some wish they had been. As for this horrible way of collecting fins, why on earth do we let it continue. watched aca and the abalone trade. repeat offenders, there needs to be tougher laws. as for the woman she needs her head read, argh

What a disgudting display of insanity. If you were to ask this woman to subject herself to the same ordeal in protest against abused children, or as Peter states, female genital mutilation, I am sure she would find an excuse to decline. While I am against finning, I most definately would not call this woman 'brave', I find her way of protest revolting. Many people have more empathy for animals than humans, quite frankly those who watched her insane stunt, are probably some of them.
