Govt rejects coal port, rail line in Qld

6/09/2008 10:00:00 AM.  |
A coal company is taking legal action over Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett's rejection of a $5.3 billion coal project in central Queensland wetlands.

Waratah Coal wanted to establish a rail line and coal port at Shoalwater Bay, north of Rockhampton but Mr Garrett rejected the proposal on the grounds it would destroy Shoalwater and Corio Bay wetlands.

Company president Peter Lynch said Waratah would be mounting an immediate challenge to Mr Garrett's ruling in the Federal Court.

"This proposal, at current contract prices, would have potentially generated over $A10 billion of export revenue and over $900 million in royalties per year for Queensland," Mr Lynch said.

"Waratah does not believe the proposal has been properly considered or its impacts properly assessed. Waratah considers its proposal should have been afforded the opportunity of scrutiny under a properly directed and formatted Environmental Impact Study and its economic significance properly assessed."

Mr Garrett said the proposal would have unacceptable impacts.

"The impacts of the rail line and port facility are simply too great to effectively mitigate, and would destroy the ecological integrity of the area," Mr Garrett said.

"This decision does not prevent an alternative proposal being lodged that does not have unacceptable impacts on Ramsar (an international treaty to conserve wetlands) and heritage values."

He said he had encouraged Waratah Coal to consider alternative sites for the port.

Australian Greens Senator Christine Milne has praised Mr Garrett's decision.

"It would have been a travesty if the community had to go through a stressful, expensive and drawn-out assessment process when from the beginning it was obvious that this coal development was globally and locally irresponsible and destructive," Senator Milne said.

Queensland Minister for Infrastructure and Planning Paul Lucas said the rejection of the rail and port that would have serviced mining in the nearby Galilee Basin did not hinder coal mining in the area.

"The ball is now in the court of Waratah Coal and other proponents to come up with rail and port proposals that don't involve Shoalwater Bay," Mr Lucas said.

"The Galilee Basin has extraordinary potential for economic development, to provide jobs and income for Queensland and Australia.

"Minister Garrett has made it clear the decision is in relation to the port at Shoalwater Bay and rail access to it, not the enormous potential for coal mines in the Galilee Basin."

Lets see if we have this correct. garrett approves of the Gunn mill in Tassie, Regardless of the fact it WILL see the loss of much forest, pump contaminants into the pristine waters of Tassie, for the life of the mill. A rail line to the waters edge wont take much. The shoal water bay he's talking about has been a military training ground for yeaers. Been bomb, had who knows what pumped through out the bay but aboat cant come to get coal? So what gives Garrett? where is the diference here?

This is what they do. In case anyone had any doubts about it, THIS is what Labor do. So next time there is an election and people have difficulty differentiating between the two major parties remember that Labor is the party that puts the ex-lead-singer of Midnight Oil into the position of Environment Minister and allows him to block a $10 Billion dollar export for Australia. We ARE the lucky country but at this rate, how much luck have we got left in the tank?

Garrett will be over ruled. Garrett is dead in the water as is Swan. They'll both be gone soon.

Finally Garrett has done what he was put there to do. This is good stuff, the only reason for the export of dirty coal is the short term quick profits for a hand full or rich environmental vandals. All coal exports should be stopped because not only is it exporting the guts of the country, it is exporting pollution and it is exporting jobs. Of course the Greedisgoodites will yell and scream, but who cares about them, they never care about anyone but themselves.

Bolton, I will take you on in any forum, or in any field that you choose to nominate, you can choose the weapons in any dual. There is nothing about you that would make me even regard it as worthy to do anything but turn up and I would make you look as pathetic as I know you to be. You have a very high opinion of yourself, but repeatedly you just bluster and run. You are incapable of creative thought and your only goal is to satisfy your short term greed and to hell with anyone or everyone else.
