School zone cameras have become the New South Wales cash cow, with 161 cameras across the State raking in $80 Million in the past year.

The figure is almost double the value of fines issued in the 2006 financial year.

Almost 700,000 speeding fines were handed out to motorists caught going over the 40 kilometre speed limit.

The school zone camera on the Hume Highway at Bankstown is the busiest, generating more than $3.8 million in 2007.

Shadow Roads Minister Andrew Fraser says a more visible police presence would slow motorists down.

“This system is not working, it’s not slowing the drivers down.”

“It’s amazing how everyone sees a police car if they’re out there,” he said.

“What we need is a higher visible police presence and we don’t need the revenue raising the government’s doing.”

Just imagine if ALL drivers actually concentrated on their driving, kept a safe distance, paid attention to their surroundings and didn't speed. The roads would be a lot safer, and no one would get fined. Hence no more cash cow for the State Government (even though they can’t manage the money they do have.) It’s really not that hard

Will Nathan Ree$ continue the lie about how they are concerned about childrens safety. Or will his real agenda be revenue raising. In his first address to the press he sure made clear that $$$ were the No1 priority. Had Carr & Co and his successors (sussexcessors) been serios about safety they would have ensured a much better system that a couple of scooter lights for the warnings. How about a line thru school zone road lanes just like the marathon line..stands out like the preverbials

Surely the issue is safety. Sure people should pay attention to the road rules, but sometimes its hard to know what is going on with the way signs change the speed multiple times, and the need to focus inside the car on the speedo so strictly. It isn't working properly in so many ways, and large revenue confirms it, as do the other stats - time for a look at fixing it?

Bloody simple- spend this cash "cash cow" on flashing lights at school zones. At least it may show that they are genuine at reducing children dying instead of revenue raking. But as we know - they're only a bunch of low life lying scumbags, they could try & prove us wrong???????????????????==as if--
