Woman hit by bus is in critical condition

7/09/2008 2:15:00 PM.  | AAP
An elderly woman is fighting for her life after being hit by a bus on the NSW central coast.

The 78-year-old was leaving a Tuggerah Lakes shopping centre about 7pm (AEST) yesterday when she was struck by the bus, police said.

The Bonnells Bay woman suffered serious internal and head injuries and was initially treated at Gosford Hospital before being airlifted to a Sydney hospital.

She is in a serious but stable condition.

The 54-year-old bus driver, as well as a number of passengers and a passer-by, assisted the woman until ambulance and police officers arrived.

The bus driver returned a negative result when he was breath tested, police said.

Any witnesses who have not spoken to police are urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
