Keelty stands by AFP’s handling of Haneef affair

8/09/2008 2:07:00 PM.  | John Barrington
Federal Police Commissioner Mick Keelty says he stands by the AFP's handling of the Mohamed Haneef affair after a closed in inquiry in Canberra

After nearly four hours, Commissioner Mick Keelty has emerged from giving evidence to the inquiry into the AFP’s actions into the failed terrorism case against Mohamed Haneef.

Federal police arrested the Indian doctor last year, in relation to the botched terrorism attacks in the UK – but the charges were later dropped due to lack of evidence.

Lawyers for Dr Haneef have been highly critical of the AFP’s handling of the affair – but commissioner Keelty says he’s standing by his organisation.

“I cooperated fully with the inquiry, the AFP has cooperated fully with the inquiry.”

Today’s hearing has been closed to media.

Commissioner Keelty says he’ll make a formal public statement soon.

This entire episode has been, adn continues to be, a disgrace. Keelty contiues to defend the indefensible. The cynical disregard for a person's most basic rights for sordid political gain diminishes us all.

I do hope Haneef sues. I hope he gets India to finance his case. Any compensation should not be financed from here. HAneef is NOT a citizen of this country. I wouldn't let him back in, he'll cause too much trouble and make too much money from books and TV rights. He won't come back as a doctor, he'll apply as an entertainer! Or maybe he can go and work with Patel in Queensland!

Haneef should sue. And should win, and should get compensation from the same country that treated him so unfairly. Unfortunately, the politicians who tried to use the case for their own advantage are either gone or going. Howard, Costello, Kevin Andrews etc should be the ones paying up. Our courts have already done the right thing on several occassions, the last being Federal Court in August 2007. Stick to the facts of the case, not your obviuous biases.

You say the Australian Government can get people into the country to do work that is necessary, lock them up, lie to the Court, selectively leak to the media, then spend another 14 months and $8M before they finally admit they found nothing, and no-one should care because the individual is not a citizen? If you really think it is important that people read the evidence contra to their view, go the website, look at where ASIO, Qld Police and Cth prosecutions say 'no evidence here'.

Carrow, with 20/20 hindsight, you (and others) are brilliant. At the time (recall) this bloke's brother in law (I think) was involved in the Glasgow terror attack. Haneef had some unexplained cell phone stuff and he had a 1-way ticket out of the country. AND YOU WOULDN'T BE SUSPICIOUS! (I know those details are not entirely correct to the detail - I am just trying to illustrate how frustrating 20/20 righteousness is)

Didn't the case against Haneef collapse because the truly damming evidence was inadmissible? I think it was an eavesdropped mobile phone conversation or online chat (something like that) which the ALP bungled?

Geoff, I recall events very well. Are you shifting ground from 'don't care if he is guilty or innocent becasue he is not a citizen' to 'there was evidence at the time'. I see you cannot stay with your first argument or defend it. On your second ground, again I direct you to the evidence which might change your point of view. It is all there in black and white at www.haneefcaseinquiry.gov.au.
