Serena Williams has won the US Open and clinched the world No.1 ranking, beating second seed Jelena Jankovic in straight sets in the women’s final today.

The fourth-seeded American prevailed 6-4 7-5 after two hours and four minutes, regaining the top ranking for the first time in more than five years.

It is Williams's third US Open title.

"I am so excited," Williams said. "I wasn't even going for number one. It is just an added bonus."

"This is special. I have been working so hard."

It was the ninth time that a grand slam final has featured two women battling for world No.1 honours.

Serbia's Anna Ivanovic was upset in the second round at Flushing Meadows, setting the stage for her tumble to third in the rankings behind the US Open winner and runner-up.

US fourth seed Williams has spent 57 prior weeks atop the rankings since first claiming the top spot in July of 2002.

Serbian second seed Jankovic spent one week atop the rankings last month, becoming the 18th woman to claim the honour.
