Govt labels alcopops research 'shonky'

9/09/2008 12:03:00 PM.  | John Barrington
A new survey shows the controversial alcopops tax has failed to reduce liquor sales, but the Government has labelled the research "shonky".

The Distilled Liquor Industry Council has surveyed 480 liquor retailers.

Nearly 90 per cent say their sales have remained unchanged, since the introduction of the alcopops tax in April.

The Government has dubbed its findings "shonky" but the Council's Stephen Riden says it's retailers that know best.

“The bottle store owners…are saying very little has changed.”

Many have also seen customers move away from ready-to-drinks to other forms of hard liquor.

But, Health Minister Nicola Roxon says the industry is only protecting it's interests.

“We would like the industry to start to be part of the solution, not just protecting their profit.”

Meantime the opposition says Labor’s criticism of the research is arrogant.

Nicola Roxon seems to have forgotten the reason they wanted to introduce this tax.Suddenly binge drinking is forgotten, and its all about grabbing the tax. I would suggest the tax itself is "shonky" if we are to believe the reasons for its introduction. Young people will always find a way around a "tax" to continue binge drinking. The health Minister should concentrate more on actually DOING something about binge drinking, we all know this is just a tax grab and will have NO effect on the youth.

The only thing that's "shonky" is the tax itself, that is if we were all to believe that this tax was brought in as a health initiative and not to raise billions in revenue in the first place. What's also "shonky" is the evidence that Ms Roxon used herself when implementing this tax, she relied heavily on one source and that source has came forward and said underage drinking has decreased. Now the health initiative is out the window and its all about not blowing a hole in the budget.
