Kidman is Hollywood's 'most overpaid'

Nicole Kidman has been named Hollywood's biggest box office dud.

The Australian redhead has many titles - Oscar winner, fashion icon and new mum - but a survey released on Wednesday in the US by Forbes magazine gave her a new tag: Hollywood's most overpaid actor.

"Despite winning an Oscar for her performance in 2002's The Hours, Kidman has become the most overpaid celebrity in Hollywood," Forbes reported.

Forbes analysed how much Hollywood's A-List were paid per movie, and how much money the movies made.

Kidman's films earned just $US1 ($A1.25) for every dollar Kidman was paid.

It was a huge drop from the $US8 ($A10) return Kidman achieved with her films in last year's survey.

The albatross hanging around Kidman's neck was critically-maligned and box office disaster, The Invasion, which Kidman was reportedly paid $US17 million ($A21.27 million) to star in.

According to Forbes, the film lost $US2.68 ($A3.35) for every dollar Kidman earned.

The survey was a mix of good and bad news for Australia's other two Oscar winners, Cate Blanchett and Russell Crowe.

Blanchett, despite her regular Oscar nominations, was 10th on the most overpaid list.

Crowe earned Forbes' most improved title, successfully removing himself from the list this year thanks to the success of his drama with Denzel Washington, American Gangster, which earned $US265 million ($A331.5 million) worldwide.

The New Zealand-born tough guy earned a healthy $US6.88 ($A8.61) return on his movies last year.

It's probably convenient Kidman and former hubby Tom Cruise broke up.

It would be a sad household.

Cruise was the third most overpaid actor, according to the list.

The former Top Gun of Hollywood can largely blame the thriller Lions for Lambs, a disaster at the box office by making just $US63 million ($A78.81 million) worldwide.

For every dollar he was paid, Cruise's movies averaged $4 ($A5) of gross income.

Number two on the overpaid list was ex-Alias TV star Jennifer Garner, with a $US3.60 ($A4.50) return following disappointing films The Kingdom and Catch and Release.

Fourth was Hollywood's highest paid actress, Cameron Diaz, who apparently didn't match her hefty pay cheques while another diva, Jennifer Lopez, came in fifth.

Perhaps Jim Carrey's big box office days are behind him as the funnyman was sixth.

Nicolas Cage was seventh, then Drew Barrymore, Will Ferrell and Blanchett rounded out the top 10.

The lot of them are overpaid, overvalued and overly thrust upon the world through the media hype. Perhaps some of the producers and writers out there can find some talent to come up with a new film, instead of all the rehashes and epic sequels to the crap made yrs ago? Now that would be worth some money.
