A ban of sumo proportions

13/09/2008 6:03:00 PM.  | LIVENEWS.com.au
A Russian athlete has been banned for life from sumo wrestling after testing positive to illicit drugs, but admitted to buying them.

Soslan Boradzov is the first to ever be expelled from the 2,000-year-old sport by the Japanese sumo association after dropping a joint of marijuana on the street.

Russian news agency RIA Novosti said he will be appealing the ban even though he admitted to buying the drug.

Boradzov made a public apology for his actions but it was not enough to overrule the ban.

Smoking cannabis is not illegal in Japan but having it in your posession could lead you into a five-year prison sentence.
