Brendan Nelson given leadership deadline

14/09/2008 3:55:00 PM.  | Olivia Suzanski

Liberal Leader Brendan Nelson has been given one month to turn around his poor showing in opinion polls.

The Telegraph reports Federal Treasurer Malcolm Turnbull has decided to hold off on a leadership challenge, opting to give Doctor Nelson another chance.

But the Liberlas are rallying behind leader Brendan Nelson.

Senator Nick Minchin has told Channel 10 there's no need for any debate about leadership this week.

“Well I’d be very surprised.”

“I’m not expecting a spill,” he said.

“What I expect of my colleagues is to accept that we had a leadership ballot last November, some nine months ago, and Brendan Nelson won that ballot.”

Turdbill is a NASTY piece of work .... wait till he becomes leader and we find out what he is really like by the leaks of his "colleagues". It will certainly be entertaining !

Exactly A Narchy. Turnbull must think he will take over when he gets back from his holiday in Italy. He may find on his return he needs to shore up his numbers some. The Coalition knows he is not popular, (except in his own mind). If there is a challenge, Turbull wont be the only one on the ticket. Nelson will stay, and if he is a dead man man walking, he has a few pals walking with him. Looking forward to some lively debate in parliament next week.Hopefully they will debate policy and not Nelson

Susan, the leadership will only be an issue next week in Rudd's mind. And in fact you'll see the opposition take the government to task particularly while "Gutter Mouth" Gilklard is at the helm (week after). Pensions will dominate discussion, Rudd will continue to (try and) use the Liberal leadership as a weapon of mass distraction from his own governm, ents inability to make (proper) decisions. (Note, people from the left dislike opinions being expressed that disagree with their own)

Moreover, the process has begun. Let's get it over & done with so that the next Lib champion can emerge. I am hoping it's Joe Hockey. Then we can all go forward past the side issues and distractions and focus on THIS government's performance... or lack of.

Geoff -The media are the key to all these issues. They backed Rudd prior to the election and, because they don't want to lose face, they continue to support him and thus he is allowed to get away with murder. The people of Australia have got to find a way to make the media more accountable. Reforming the ABC will do for starters.

More sensible to say that people from all parts of the political spectrum dislike valueless opinions which add nothing to the debate at hand, and seek to distract attention away from their own entrenched position at every opportunity. Back to the topic: 4 corners showed Turnbull as possibly an even more dangerous figure than Howard, in terms of his sole motivation being his own pursuit of power. I hope he ditches Bishop though as she appears psychotic to a casual observer.

I am pleased you returned to the topic, Darren Carrow. Hopefully postings on this issue won't fall apart. Why do you find Bishop psychotic? (sincere question ).

My sincere answer is to have a really close look at her eyes. I also think she is one of the few in the Lib party who was and is truly committed to the WorkChoices agenda, and I am convinced that if she ever came close to the reins again, she has WorkChoices part 2 & 3 in a bottom drawer soemwhere ready to spring on all of us.

Dazza, if "looking at her eyes" is the basis for decision making...MOST OF LABOR's FRONT BENCH WOULDN'T GET A GUERNSEY....particularly GILLARD! And if it's "Work Choices" then that's a joke, because most of it remains ..and will do right after 2010 .. THAT"S WHY THE UNIONS ARE MOUNTING THEIR MEDIA CAMPAIGN. Seriously, why don't you fools from the left "think" before opening mouths and repeating Ruddspin rhetoric?

carrow-Thank you for proving my point-right on cue you mentioned the ABC and their unsolicited expose on Malcolm Turnbull. The ABC is always on the prowl looking for topics that are designed to hurt the Coalition and to support Labor and the rest of the left spectrum. In spite of all the difficulties Brendan Nelson is doing an admiral job and he should have the full support of his colleagues in eventually having Rudd tossed onto the scrap heap here he belongs.

Since the ABC had Janet Albrechtsen and the history-denying Windshcuttle foisted onto their Board, they have been more on the right of centre in my view. Particularly when you listen to radio national and every topic has to be subjected to blather from the CIS. and about Nelson, if I were him, I wouldn't be sitting with my back to any doors...

carrow- Kerry O’Brien, Barry Cassidy, Tony Jones and ex staffers/Labor and would be Labor politicians Maxine Mckew, Mary Delahuntey, and Mike Bailey-oh yeah all very right wing. Give yourself an upper cut you have earned it.

Des, do I detect a smidgin of hostility? You're were aleady an outside chance for the Glenn Milne dummy spit award, but you're moving up in the field. So, you're saying that freedom of the media in a democratic society should be limited to ensure that only reportage that meets your criteria of fairness to your preferred poitical party? Ever heard of 'I detest what you say, but defend your right to say it'? I have been extending that courtesy to you.

I agree Darren, even though I do not always trust 4 corners editing, Turnbull is a media created wannabe, not very well liked and full of himself. Julia Bishop conducts herself in a very respectable manner, Gillard could take some lessons from her, regardless of policy. Pensions should be the main topic, and I am still waiting for the Opposition to put Garnauts latest report up for debate Geoff. If it is going to happen I hope it is swift A Narchy, then we can get down to issues.

Posted by: susan lawe, gippsland

Sunday, 14 September 2008

Susan, I think Rudd will (rapidy) sideline Garnaut's report because it fails to support Rudd's ideology. It will be moved to the group of "experts" that he fails to listen to (like Treasury). Garnaut has moved now (so close) to teh Liberal position that it would be an embarassment for Rudd to adopt its findings.

Begs the question why the report hasnt been front page news as the first one was Geoff. I think journalists need to get back to reporting the news as it is presented, rather than publishing that which speaks to their own personal bias. Journalism is supposed to be free of bias, from any side. Regardless of embarrassment, Garnauts latest should be up for debate, he is after all, Labors 'expert'. Here is hoping parliament gets back to issues, and ALL get on with their jobs.

its not going to stop until they stop and do what brendan has decided to do, give it a deadline. hopefully then talk of liberal leadership will stop.

Brendan didnt , never has, he continually states he will be leader. Turnbull and the media have decided on a deadline apparently, even though it says in this article " the Liberlas are rallying behind leader Brendan Nelson". Nelson needs to go stay with the performance of the current Govt next week as the opposition leader should. Let the media and Turnbull make useless deadlines, all Brendan has to do , is what he has been doing, keep asking questions of the PM and his Govt's performance.

Nelson, Turnbull, Hockey - it doesn't matter who leads. The Libs only have has-beens, wannabees and never-will-bes, all that's left after 11 years of Howard knifing/dumping on anyone who was the slightest threat to him, i.e., talented. Like Thatcher in the UK, there's no talent left. It will take 2 or 3 more parliaments and 2 0r 3 leaders before they get enough fresh blood and are electable again. Meanwhile Rudd quietly gets on with the job and enjoys the show.

Sunday, 14 September 2008

Pollard, who specifically did Howard "knife and dump?" Or is this more rhetoric disguised as political opinion? The best "back stabber" was of course Keating?

If you regard Rudd & Swan as talent and see their inaction as "getting on with the job" then you're very easily pleased indeed. I wonder if Carpenter's die hards over in WA said the same thing a few months back?

It is a show alright Doug, all horns, whistles a mirrors so far. I want action on something. I want the Govt to be seen doing their job, not continually worrying over the opposition leader, whilst procrastinating over reports and aged single pensions, or adding a tax to alcopops disguised as a cure all for youth binge drinking. Would even appreciate the PM staying in Australia for more than a few days. Anything is better than the no action show running in Canberra right now.
