New Premier Nathan Rees appears to have been given a strong message in the weekend Local Council elections.

It'll take some time before counting is completed, but already Labor candidates have taken a hit especially in inner-Sydney councils.

The Greens have polled well with more than 70 candidates likely to be elected across the state.

Greens MP Lee Rhiannon says Mr Rees has to take drastic action.

“Clearly Premier Rees has a lot of work to do and he needs to start by cleaning out some of these damaging policies.”

“At a local government area, issues such as the bad planning laws and political donations were top concerns.where the Greens have picked up a lot of votes.

Opposition Leader Barry O’Farrell says he expects voters to keep telling Labor to get back on track at every poll from now on.

“This is a State Labor Government that for 13-and-a-half years has promised plenty and delivered too little.”

“We’ve got to use every opportunity – Council elections, by-elections – to get the message through that it’s time they stopped looking after themselves and started to focus on fixing the problems people struggle with every day across this city and state.,” he said.

Labor needs to be hit hard in the State By-elections! How many seats need to go before we have either a "hung" parliament or a Liberal majority? Isn't it about 6 needed to fall?

The greens polling well doesnt necessarily mean Labor has taken a hit. Labor will get their votes on tight issues anyway. If the end result is a swing to Greens, I would hardly call that a "hit" against Labor. Perhaps more like a whisper in their ear. Remains to be seen anyway, until counting is finished

Main problem is that the general public is fundamentally stupid - only explanation for why so many people keep voting for Labor........

Had the people woken up last March they may have saved NSW from the mess that it is now. Lets hope we don't wait too long to get rid of Rudd and his cronies.

One more NSW politician saying "Sorry" . If you need to say sorry too many times, it means you are doing something wrong all the time and sorry is meaningless unles you stop doing wrong. It is too late for Labor . We don't want you to fix anything. We want you to go and we are "Sorry"we made the mistake by voting you in in last election

I used to think that a Green vote was a good alternative to the major parties but now you have to realise that a green vote is a Labor vote. That is how they got Labor in Federally and it will happen at State and local level.

Problem is, that nobody really wants the Greens to ever run the country. Its just a protest. They're all Labor votes in disguise. If the Greens ever got power, I think they's make Nimbin the capital of Australia!

I just wanted to say wat an awesome campaign its been for the Liberals in Fairfield. Having worked along side Frank and his team i have witnessed the Labor backlash first hand specialy at the booths on Saturday. The Liberals in Fairfield are tipped to get 5 people in which is fantastic result for the Libs in a Labor heartland. The Liberals swing in Fairfield also shows that people are starting to realise the council which has been Labor for 55 years has let the city down. Congratulations!

Some consolation I guess. Admittedly, all the parties were a disappointment and I wouldn't be too quick to pat yourself on the back necessarily. Policy wise it seemed that all candidates were more concerned with outdoing each other's foot path budget. There is more work to be done and hopefully Fairfield residents will finally have a candidate and a party who shows some substance at the next election.

Mark I appreciate good humour, and that gave me a good laugh. Best one for a while, love skipping the wash cycle straight to spin. Thanks

Emmanuel that will be the day when we have a Liberal Fairfield, I voted Frank Olivieri in hope and resignation it won't happen anytime soon. Not until the demographic changes in Fairfield ie immigrant hovels, will we ever have a liberal council.

Patricia is that like 'branch stacking" ? At the risk of being called "racist" or some other name used to keep those who dare speak silent, I will say it anyway....branch stacking is rife in many migrant enclaves through out the country...Ask Grasby... Many voted Green thinking they were slapping Labor, a green vote is a labor vote.

Labor has not been hit hard enough. some peoples mentality is I have always voted Labor/Liberal and they will always do that they do not know the difference, it does not matter how bad the party is performing. So we deserve what we get.

Patricia....you can say that again!, i was a candidate running for Parks with Frank and Andrew and the reaction was pretty much anti-Labor. As an Assyrian-Australian many of the Assyrians around Parks voted Liberal because they would been here for years and are more educated with politics. As for the newcomers in Fairfield they have been dragged in by Labor. Overall we did very good this time we surley threw the pants of Labor as i was told by Labor themselves.

What amazed me the most was when i was handing out flyers i was saying vote for change, some voters were saying were ready for change back to me. We used ready for change as our slogan through the campaign. People had remembered it from our website and facebook group which had more than 260 members. One voter also mentioned the corflutes at how different they looked and that the how to vote flyers and mail flyers were all branded with the same colours and design. I personally think we did good.

Emmanuel, Frank Olivieri needs to be more proactive also, we need to see evidence of what he could do : Fairfield is a disgrace, a flea market suburb with no business development, money changing hands for shoddy apartments in the middle of its CBD. I avoid Fairfield at all costs.

The fairfield Mayor (ALP) has posters of himself put up illegally every single election I have been here since 1995. Each election he is asked about it and he says he hasn't put up the posters, but he won't take them down until after the election either. I am assuming he is not getting endorsement from the SRA and state government.

You make two good points there Patricia. As encouraging as this latest election may be to some, the ALP still had 50%, 46% and 42% of the votes in the three wards (as of this afternoon anyway). Let's not get carried away here. The ALP has been in control of Fairfield Council for 55 yrs as Emmanuel points out. Considering the backlash the ALP received in other areas and they still manage to get between 42% and 50% in Fairfield, there is still a heck of a lot of work to be done.

cont: I don't think any of the parties did enough campaigning to seriously threaten the ALP stranglehold. Most candidates wee more concerned about the state of footpaths more than anything else. I did not hear or read of anyone talk about credible policies. Fairfield CBD is a disgrace as Patricia points out and nobody seems to have the conviction to do anything about it. The ALP still got 50% of the votes despite current controversies and the Libs see it as reason to celebrate. A shame really...

Congratulations Emmanuel! Yes Susan thats exactly what it is. Immigrants to this country are being told by the Labor party that they are the only party for further migration and somehow promise them to help open the doors for their relatives etc. Yes the newcomers are sucked into believing that the Liberals are anti-immigration. The Labor party picks on the lowest common denominators to con these voters. There should be a Royal Commission into Fairfield Council
