Nelson will cause trouble from the back bench: Goward

16/09/2008 6:50:00 PM.  | Gil Taylor and Richard Maxton
A state Liberal MP has broken ranks, claiming Brendan Nelson could be out to cause trouble and wrong foot new leader Malcolm Turnbull.

Dr Nelson has announced he will be moving to the backbench after being rolled as the party's leader 45 votes to 41 in a snap ballot this morning.

NSW Shadow Environment Minister Prue Goward has told 2GB's Philip Clark that could be a problem for the Federal Opposition.

"Dr Nelson going to the back bench and refusing to take a portfolio I suspect will be difficult for the new leader because Dr Nelson is a very able man with now a lot of time on his hands."

Meanwhile Peter Costello says there could be rocky days ahead for new leader Malcolm Turnbull within his own party, as far as the republic issue is concerned.

Mr Turnbull is a noted republican and the former Treasurer says that is an interesting twist.

"The membership of the Liberal party would still predominantly be monarchist. This would be a tough issue for the Liberal Party."

"As I write in my book, I thought the Liberal Party should have handled this while it was in government. It will be much harder, in Opposition, to handle this issue."

Ok, This must be a world record for getting the knives out in Australian Politics, Less than 12 hours and the party is breaking up. Costello thinks a honeymoon for Spinbull of half an hour is heaps long enough. The comedians will be killing themselves to make the jokes fast enough.

Goward and Costello why dont you keep your gobs shut. Bloody hell, let Hockey take it, he is the only one keeping quiet and at least he has a bloody go at the Govt, instead of yapping on the media about his colleagues. You all keep whinging the way you are you wont have a bloody party worth 2 bob between you. We need a working opposition, not a bunch of old chooks cackling on the media every 5 minutes. The media are good at making their own witch hunts up without your help.

"Turnbull has his own agenda " Why does a rich , successful person need to join politics ? " . For the good of the Australian people ! I doubt it ....

Chris Henry, When you become a self made person and want to do something for your country, this is also true of the US and the UK politics. Malcolm Turnbull like many Australians, started with nothing, and made their own way in the world. And what about you Chris, what have you done lately for the country.

A 45-41 win is hardly a decisive win. It gives every indication that the party cannot select a definite leader to everyone's satisfaction. And there will be 'factions' amongst those who voted for Dr Nelson and those who think that Mr Turbull's time is "not yet" as he is not yet vetted with the Australian electorate. All the same, who is there now that Mr Costello is not interested and will not take up the baton and lead us out of a labour government?
