Alcopops loophole lets new sweet drink avoid tax

16/09/2008 6:15:00 AM.  | Gillian Cannon
A dramatic drop in alcohol sales, since the introduction of the alcopops tax has production companies developing new drinks.

A confidential report by Nielsen given to key players in the alcohol industry this week shows the Rudd government's attack on binge drinking is taking affect.

Sales of pre-mixed drinks are down more than 26 percent since April, a decrease that hasn't been offset by a small increase in beer and liquor sales.

But alcopop makers have come up with a new drink which gets around that tax.

While Bolt tastes and looks like a pre-mixed drink it's made from alcohol derived from lower taxed beer and will cost $25 a carton less than spirit equivalents.

Now we can see the influence of Nelson and his free booze for kiddies policy. This also shows the wisdom of the Rudd governments policy, the dishonesty of the Alcohol drug pushers and the dishonesty of the Lib supporters on this site.

Graeme the tax was created on the grounds of trying to stop youth binge drinking. Even you have to admit it has nothing to do with binge drinking. If they were going to try for a tax grab on alcohol why not across the board, at least they would have been seen to be trying legitimately to do something....the alcopop tax is a useless tax grab that has had no effect what so ever on binge drinking. At least be honest, it is a tax grab, pure and simple.

Slowe, Read the article and weep. You continue to post rubbish long after you said that you would not post any more. Read the article and then tell the truth and stop saying that I have to tell lies. The tax on Kiddie Booze makes sense, increasing tax on all alcohol to much higher rates also makes sense, even pricing the poison off the market, Read the article, it says the tax is reducing binge drinking, it says that you are and always have been wrong.

Mr Henderson, I am 47 years old and consume RTD's or the latest slang term "alcopops" on special occasions and responsibly, so to assume that these are "kiddie drinks" just comes to show how much you've been mesmerised by all this talk of "alcopops" and "teenage binge drinking" by the Labor party. Alcohol decrease is most likely related to the fact it is Winter and sales drop by loads every year. Good on ID for doing this, it will have an even more opposite effect now.
