Cancer cluster scare in Qld schools

20/09/2008 3:18:00 PM.  | AAP
Queensland Health is investigating two more sites in a string of cancer cluster scares in the state's south-east.

Four cases have been reported at Warrigal Road State School and five at Sandra Court at Kingston, both on Brisbane's southside.

The department is also investigating 11 cases at Deception Bay High School, 12 at the Morayfield High School and 11 at Stockland Park, home of the Kawana Junior League Club, on the Sunshine Coast.

Spokeswoman Dr Linda Selvey said investigations at the latest sites were preliminary.

"We don't think there should be any cause of concern for the community at either of these places or anywhere else," Dr Selvey said.

She said cancer was on the rise because communities were getting older and lifestyles were changing.

"Being overweight and diabetes can make you more likely to get cancer.

"We are detecting some cancers which makes it seem like cancer is increasing."

University of Queensland associate professor of health statistics Michael Coory said while investigations were important it was "unlikely" they would reveal the cancer cause.

"Often there is an increased risk of cancer at these schools but 99 times out of 100 we can't identify a cause," Prof Coory said.

"It's important that the Cancer Council and Queensland Health do investigate the cancer cluster but we have to be honest ... and it is unlikely we will find anything."

Earlier this week Morayfield principal Sharyn Donald assured parents their children were not at risk.

Has there been historical research of the cancer cluster areas to determine previous land-use? Our organization has many files of cancer clusters in schools, parks and homes that were built on or adjacent to closed dumps. Most closed dumps contain carcinogenic chemicals. I strongly recommend 80-year title searches be conducted on all the properties where cancer clusters have been reported. Janice R. England People Investigating Toxic Sites
