Meat off the menu in debt-ridden hospitals

21/09/2008 9:00:00 AM.  | Richard Maxton and Erin Maher

Meat has been taken off the menu in two NSW hospitals because the debt-ridden Health Department isn't paying its bills, a State MP claims.

Patients in Gilgandra and Coonabarrabran hospitals are being fed meatless meals because the Health Department has not paid their butcher bills.

It has left State MP Kevin Humphries so concerned about inadequate patient diets, he's offered to foot the bill himself.

"Our patients deserve better. It is a sad day when staff are forced to compromise patient care with a reduced and inadequate diet," he told Fairfax.

"I have even heard stories of staff buying meat for their patients out of their own pockets."

The Health Department admits it has several outstanding debts to a number of creditors and has apologised but it seems the money is being spent elsewhere.

It has been revealed public hospitals are forking out $37 million a year to fly in overseas and interstate doctors to fill gaps left by chronic staffing shortages.

One notes the silence on the account of the UNPAID BUTCHER/S! Lousy bugga's, you can bet your last bit of brass they get paid each payday. What is it people like this? The govt of NSW could find Money for the World Youth Day, It's noted that Not only did it cost in Finances but was also the catalyist for the deaths of the rail link and more Hospital issues. Time the governments in this country start to get this place sorted out before we end up with Huge population figures in misery.

Nick I would suggest they are so far out of touch with what is happening out here, on all levels of Govt, because their fancy arses are well taken care of..by us fools. This is happening country wide, and in NSW case scenario, Rees has put money aside to investigate a bloody panther,..Rudd added an alocopop tax to address youth binge drinking, an absolute joke, all of them...we pay beaurocrats hundreds of thousands for reports and even more for advisors..while the country goes to pot

Maybe if we appeal to Ethiopia or Bangladesh for food aid, I'm sure they would help. Nice painting us Aussies got the other day, about $16 million , maybe the starving hospital patients might even see a photo of it.

I am supprised there are still hospitals in these country towns, its a wonder the government hasnt closed them down due to lack of funding. like most country towns they will go too, and have to travel 100's kms to get treatment. the bill probably wasnt paid for 6mths before the butcher pulled the plug. these are small hospitals, reba wouldnt have even have cared or known of their existance.

Many people suffer modern health problems due to our western excessive diets. All patients should go through the healing process with whole-food vegan diets. Not only is it healthier, it is cheaper and would remove the risk of diseases such as some cancers, diabetes and heart disease. There is a misconception that food can only be complete with meat/fish. However, the reverse is contrary. People in hospital should be weaned off their ill-conceived diets.

Well they are looking after our health. We don't want to get fat do we? Where is our new health minister? Punching up some poor rastaurant staff? Or organising bigger portions of beef stroganoff for mates in Camberra? Maybe the Panther ate all the meat.

Amid the background of hospital beds closing at both Bathurst and Orange Base hospitals and now the revelation of meat being removed from patients diets because the GWAHS is debt ridden“It may be concerning to the public to know that the debt ridden Greater Western Area hospitals who have resorted to such appalling situations. Conversely refuse to claim payments from our daughter’s Private Health fund, for a 3 day and a 1 day stay as a private patient in a GWAHS public hospital. These stays were in Nov/07 and Mar/08. Even though we have sent them numerous requests that they forward out the HCF claim forms so that this payment can take place. The GWAHS CEO, Claire Blizzard and the manager of Orange Base hospital Narelle Davis both stating that this payment (which is substantial) can be taken out of the public funded Trea
