Greens slam PM's international clean coal promotion

22/09/2008 10:44:00 AM.  | AAP
The Australian Greens have attacked Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's plan to talk up the future of clean coal at the United Nations this week.

Mr Rudd, in a speech to the United Nations General Assembly in New York, intends telling other nations about Australia's push for burying under ground pollution from coal-fired power stations.

Greens climate change spokeswoman Christine Milne has accused Mr Rudd of letting down the environment for the sake of the coal industry.

"For all those people who when they voted for Kevin Rudd thought they were going to get some leadership on climate change, what they are going to get is a push for a global coal pact, rather than deep cuts and moving to the low-carbon economy," she told reporters.

The coal industry was pushing for a good deal out of global climate-change talks later this year, Senator Milne said.

Last week, Mr Rudd announced a new $100 million institute would be built to work on clean coal, also called carbon capture and storage.

The Greens want Mr Rudd to focus on renewable energy - which does not generate emissions at all - rather than coal.

When will they ever learn. There is little that is Green about Labor. The problem is the Socialist have infiltrated the Environment Movement and the result has been that the Environment movement has let Labor get away with far too much. The problem is the Coalition is even worse. Labor is bad, the COALition though is off the scale worse. The Environment movement has to hold Labor to account without fear or favour. And the Greens had better sort themselves out, too many socialists in there.

I partially agree with the greens on this one. I agree that we shouldnt be burying our CO2 emmisions, because we shouldnt be using coal or oil for that matter. If carbon capture is going to happen, then we should find a way to seperate the oxygen from the carbon viably, after all, CO2 is mostly oxygen. Unfortunetly for the greens however, the only way we will be able to ditch coal and still have some money left over is with nuclear, and we all know the Aus public is scared of that prospect.

Yeah, that's a good idea! Maybe we should all walk around with a device attached to our head which separates the oxygen from the CO2 we exhale. If we can get 4 billion people doing this then maybe we can see if CO2 really does contol the climate.
